Newfoundland and Labrador (; french: Terre-Neuve-et-Labrador; frequently abbreviated as NL) is the easternmost province of Canada, in the country's Atlantic region. The province comprises the island of Newfoundland and the continental region of Labrador, having a total size of 405,212 square kilometres (156,500 sq mi). In 2021, the population of Newfoundland and Labrador was estimated to be 521,758. The island of Newfoundland (and its smaller neighbouring islands) is home to around 94 per cent of the province's population, with more than half residing in the Avalon Peninsula. Labrador borders the province of Quebec, and the French overseas collectivity of Saint Pierre and Miquelon lies about 20 km west of the Burin Peninsula. Bell Island (Newfoundland And Labrador)
Bell Island is an island that is part of Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada's easternmost province. With an area of 34 km2, it is by far the largest island in Conception Bay, a large bay in the southeast of the island of Newfoundland. The provincial capital of St. John's is less than 20 km to the east. The coastline of Bell Island consists almost entirely of cliffs that tower up to 45 m above the surf and also has several special rock formations. The island is home to four settlements with a total of over 2000 inhabitants. The vast majority of them live in the main settlement of Wabana, which can be reached from Newfoundland via a ferry connection to Portugal Cove. Bickfordville
Bickfordville is a hamlet in the Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador. The community is located in the south of Bell Island in Newfoundland's eastern Conception Bay. History The place owes its name to the fact that a large part of the population there bears the surname Bickford. Until 1970 there was a local branch of the Loyal Orange Association in Bickfordville. In 1947 a referendum was held on the island to decide whether or not to grant it a municipality status; with "no" as a result. Bickfordville then had 43 adults of which 12 voted for and 31 against. On April 2, 1978, the island was hit by a huge and never fully cleared explosion that came to be known as the Bell Island Boom. Wabana, Newfoundland And Labrador
Wabana is a Canadian town and the largest, and only incorporated, community on Bell Island in the province of Newfoundland and Labrador. Geography The town is situated on the northeast end of the island and was incorporated in 1950. Bell Island's soil contains red hematite or iron ore and this resource was the main reason for Wabana's development. Economy Wabana came to prominence during the 1890s when the Butler family from Port de Grave staked mining claims on the north side of the island. These were sold to the Nova Scotia Steel Company and later sold to the Dominion Steel Corporation in the early 1900s. The first mine opened in 1896 and the site of the mines was named Wabana by Thomas Cantly, an official with Nova Scotia Steel Co. - the name being Abenaki for "place where the light shines first."
