"gift of ships of the line") was a subscription effort launched by Étienne François de Choiseul, Duke of Choiseul and secretary of State to the Navy in 1761 as an effort to rebuild the French naval power, diminis ... donation from individuals. The construction of ''Union'', initially ordered in 1755, dragged on until 1763. In 1767, she cruised off Morocco under Captain Pierre-Claude Haudeneau de Breugnon. In 1778, she was converted into a hospital ship and was appointed to a squadron under Admiral d'Orvilliers. The ship of the line was designed for the naval tactic known as the line of battle, which depended on the two columns of opposing warships maneuvering to volley fire with the cannons along their broadsides.
