French Frigate Sirène (1795)
The ''Sirène'' was a 40-gun ''Coquille'' class frigate of the French Navy. She took part in a number of campaigns and actions before she was badly damaged in a battle on 22 March 1808. Refloated after being beached to avoid capture, she was hulked. ''Sirène'' was broken up in 1825. French Revolutionary Wars Begun as ''Fidèle'', she was commissioned as ''Sirène'' in May 1795 under Lieutenant Charles Berrenger. She took part in the Expédition d'Irlande. On 17 December ''Sirène'' and the were sailing to France from Cayenne when they were able to capture the East Indiaman ''Calcutta'' off Madeira. Pierre-Julien Gilbert
Pierre-Julien Gilbert (1783 in Brest – 1860 in Brest) was a French painter who specialised in naval scenes. Gilbert was a pupil of Pierre Ozanne and Louis-Philippe Crépin. He taught painting at the École Navale from 1816, and was admitted to accompany the Navy during the Invasion of Algiers in 1830. Gilbert was professor of drawing at the Naval School of Brest. Whaling is the process of hunting of whales for their usable products such as meat and blubber, which can be turned into a type of oil that became increasingly important in the Industrial Revolution. Groix
Groix (; br, Enez Groe) is an island and a commune in the Morbihan department of the region of Brittany in north-western France. Groix lies a few kilometres off the coast of Lorient. Several ferries a day run from Lorient to Groix. There are a few small towns on the island. High cliffs are on its north coast and sandy beaches in secluded coves on the south coast. Groix is also home to a wide variety of sea birds. Groix is also famous for hosting the only convex beach in Europe, which also moves following sea currents. HMS ''Narcissus'' was the lead ship of the Royal Navy ''Narcissus''-class 32-gun fifth-rate frigate, launched in 1801. She participated in the War of 1812. Career In late 1805, ''Narcissus'' joined a squadron under the command of Commodore Sir Home Popham. This squadron was part of a force dispatched to take the Cape of Good Hope from the Dutch. HMS Aigle (1801)
HMS ''Aigle'' was a 36-gun, fifth-rate frigate of the Royal Navy. Ordered on 15 September 1799 and built at Bucklers Hard shipyard, she was launched 23 September 1801. More than fifty of her crew were involved in the Easton Massacre when she visited Portland in April 1803 to press recruits. Her captain and three other officers stood trial for murder but were acquitted. HMS ''Saturn'' was a 74-gun third-rate ship of the line of the Royal Navy, launched on 22 November 1786 at Northam. The vessel served during the Napoleonic Wars with the Channel Fleet, taking part in the 1801 Battle of Copenhagen. With the beginning of the War of 1812, ''Saturn'' was modified to become a frigate designed to take on large American vessels of that type. John Lawford
Sir John Lawford (c. 1756 – 22 December 1842) was an officer of the Royal Navy who served during the American War of Independence and the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars. He had a long and distinguished career, seeing action during the war with America at the Battle of the Saintes, and was commanding small ships during the interwar years and by the outbreak of war with Revolutionary France. He graduated to larger ships, despite the loss of a frigate under his command in 1794, and was commanding in British waters by 1798. Guy-Victor Duperré
Guy-Victor Duperré (20 February 1775 – 2 November 1846) was a French naval officer and Admiral of France. He is known for commanding French naval forces in the Mauritius campaign of 1809–11 and was victorious in the Battle of Grand Port, where he was wounded.
