French Cruiser Infernet
''Infernet'' was the second and final member of the of protected cruisers built for the French Navy in the 1890s. The ''D'Estrées''- class cruisers were ordered as part of a construction program directed at strengthening the fleet's cruiser force at a time the country was concerned with the growing naval threat of the Italian and German fleets. The new cruisers were intended to serve overseas in the French colonial empire. ''D'Estrées'' was armed with a main battery of two guns, was protected by an armor deck that was thick, and was capable of steaming at a top speed of up to . ''Infernet'' had a relatively short career. She was completed in 1900, after which she was assigned to the Northern Squadron. In 1901, she was sent to French Madagascar, and two years later, she was transferred to the East Indies, where she remained through 1905. Louis-Antoine-Cyprien Infernet
Louis-Antoine-Cyprien Infernet (1757–1815) was a French Navy officer, famous for his bravery at the Battle of Trafalgar. He was born of humble origins near Toulon, a relative of André Masséna, he was rough and spoke in a strong Provençal accent. He joined the French Navy as a cabin boy and performed 'powder monkey' duties too. He was a tall man for the time and of open, agreeable personality. Infernet captained , a Spanish-built 74-gun ship of the line, at the Battle of Trafalgar. ''Intrépide'' was part of Dumanoir's six-ship vanguard squadron; Nelson's plan left these ships downwind and away from the fight, and Dumanoir did not answer Villeneuve's calls to tack and return to engage the English. The displacement or displacement tonnage of a ship is its weight. The draft or draught of a ship's hull is the vertical distance between the waterline and the bottom of the hull (keel). The draught of the vessel is the maximum depth of any part of the vessel, including appendages such as rudders, propellers and drop keels if deployed.
