French India Socialist Party
The French India Socialist Party (french: Parti socialiste de l'Inde française) was a political party in French India. The party played a dominant role in the political life in the colony, being backed by the French administration. The party favoured retaining links with France, but would eventually turn against French rule. Édouard Goubert
Édouard Goubert (29 July 1894 – 14 August 1979) was mayor and first List of Chief Ministers of Puducherry, chief minister of Pondicherry (union territory), Pondicherry between 1 July 1963 and 11 September 1964. Initially a strongly pro-French leader, he later shifted towards the pro-merger Indian National Congress, which ultimately became the death knell for the sovereignty of France's ''comptoirs'' (trading posts) in India. He and Lambert Saravane founded the French India Socialist Party in July 1947. Goubert was popularly known as ''pappa Goubert''. The Mahe Socialist Party (french: Parti socialiste de Mahé) was a political party in Mahé, French India. The party was a unit of the Indian Socialist Party. It had no links to the Socialist Party of French India of Edouard Goubert. François Mitterrand
François Marie Adrien Maurice Mitterrand (26 October 19168 January 1996) was President of France, serving under that position from 1981 to 1995, the longest time in office in the history of France. As First Secretary of the Socialist Party, he was the first left-wing politician to assume the presidency under the Fifth Republic. Reflecting family influences, Mitterrand started political life on the Catholic nationalist right. He served under the Vichy regime during its earlier years. The French Section of the Workers' International (french: Section française de l'Internationale ouvrière, SFIO) was a political party in France that was founded in 1905 and succeeded in 1969 by the modern-day Socialist Party. The SFIO was founded during the 1905 Globe Congress in Paris as a merger between the French Socialist Party and the Socialist Party of France in order to create the French section of the Second International, designated as the party of the workers' movement. National Democratic Front (French India)
The National Democratic Front (french: Front national démocratique) was a political coalition in French India. The movement dominated the political scene in the colony for a brief period until the emergence of a split between the socialists and communists in the coalition. The National Democratic Front was founded in January 1946. The front consisted of communists, socialists, the Mahajan Sabha and the '' Combat'' group (led by Julien Adiceam, who had arrived in French India from Algeria). The National Democratic Front contested the 1946 municipal, Representative Assembly and French National Assembly elections. Socialist Party has been the name of several political parties in India, all of which have their roots in the Congress Socialist Party during the freedom struggle. Background Socialism had a late appearance in Indian politics and this was attributed to a preoccupation on the part of political activists with the independence movement. Differences in class, political perspectives, and economic objectives were set aside in favor of securing freedom from the British colonial rule. Specifically, socialist doctrines were even seen as a liability due to its theme of class conflict, which could have weakened national forces in their struggle for freedom. Pondicherry District
The Puducherry district, also known by its former name Pondicherry district, is one of the four districts of the union territory of Puducherry in South India. The district occupies an area of , spread over 11 non-contiguous enclaves lying on or near the Bay of Bengal within a compact area in the state of Tamil Nadu.
