Fremantle Railway Bridge (known also as the North Fremantle Bridge) is the railway bridge on the Fremantle railway line that crosses the Swan River between Fremantle and North Fremantle. It is the second structure with that name. North Fremantle is a suburb of Perth, Western Australia, located within the City of Fremantle, a local government area of the state. Its postcode is 6159. Background Until 1916, the masthead read "conducted by John Norton"; then between 1916 and 1920, it read "conducted by John Norton's Trustees". ''Truth'' was an established newspaper published in Sydney and owned by William Willis, Adolphus Taylor and Patrick Crick. Norton worked for ''Truth'' and became editor and part-owner in 1891, but he was soon dismissed for repeated drunkenness. Through extensive litigation, Norton acquired the newspaper in 1896. Fremantle Harbour is Western Australia's largest and busiest general cargo port and an important historical site. ''The Inquirer & Commercial News'' was a newspaper published in Perth, Western Australia from 1855 to 1901. In May 1847, Edmund Stirling acquired ''The Inquirer'' from Francis Lochée, who established the paper in August 1840 together with William Tanner. Tanner disposed of his interest in the paper in June 1843. In July 1855, ''The Inquirer'' merged with ''The Commercial News and Shipping Gazette'', which was owned by Robert John Sholl, to form ''The Inquirer & Commercial News'', in the joint ownership of Sholl and Stirling. Stirling's eldest son John joined the paper around 1863 and operated the paper with his father when Sholl left. In 1878, Stirling's three other sons Horace, Frederick and Baldwin joined the paper, trading as Stirling & Sons. When Stirling retired, his three sons took control of the paper as Stirling Bros. Fremantle Traffic Bridge
The Fremantle Traffic Bridge carries Queen Victoria Street over the Swan River, linking the suburbs of North Fremantle and Fremantle in Perth, Western Australia. History With the 1866 built bridge connecting North Fremantle and Fremantle in urgent need of replacement, work commenced on a replacement in November 1937. It was envisaged to have a short lifespan with Fremantle Harbour expected to be extended further east. Hence it was built out of timber rather than concrete. It opened on 15 December 1939. Construction of a replacement bridge is scheduled to commence in 2023 with completion scheduled for 2026.
