Fremantle Passenger Terminal
The Fremantle Passenger Terminal was built on Victoria Quay, Fremantle in 1960–62, The construction replaced the former cargo sheds located at the site of construction. It was opened in time for arrival of competitors for the Empire Games in 1962. The terminal is the largest in Australia and is the only passenger terminal in Australia capable of berthing two cruise liners simultaneously. Significance In 2000 the building was permanently listed on the State Register of Heritage Places, was classified by the National Trust in 2001, and was also registered on the former Register of the National Estate. Its 50th anniversary was celebrated in 2010. Fremantle Port Authority
Fremantle Port Authority, also known by its registered business name Fremantle Ports, is the responsible authority created under the Western Australian Port Authorities Act 1999. Harbour administration In August 1829 the Fremantle Harbour Master position was created and the first incumbent was Captain Mark John Currie, serving for three years before leaving the colony in 1832. He was succeeded by Daniel Scott, who served for eighteen years as harbourmaster until he resigned in 1850. Captain James Harding was appointed acting harbourmaster of Fremantle, upon the resignation of Scott and the position was confirmed in 1852. Harding drowned in June 1867 attempting to assist a sinking vessel, Strathmore, near Garden Island. Following Harding's death Captain George J. Butcher was acting harbourmaster. SS ''Oriana'' was the last of the Orient Steam Navigation Company's ocean liners. She was built at Vickers-Armstrongs, Barrow-in-Furness, Cumbria, England and launched on 3 November 1959 by Princess Alexandra. Originally resplendent with her owners' traditional corn-coloured hull, ''Oriana'' appeared as an Orient Line ship until 1966, when that company was fully absorbed into the P&O group. Faced with unprofitable around-the-world passenger routes, the P&O white hulled ''Oriana'' was operated as a full-time cruise ship from 1973. Sir David Brand KCMG (1 August 1912 – 15 April 1979) was an Australian politician.
