Freeman Awards
The Freeman Book Awards are annual awards for new young adult and children's literature, that contribute meaningfully to an understanding of East and Southeast Asia. Establishment In 2016 the National Consortium for Teaching about Asia (NCTA), the Committee on Teaching about Asia (CTA) of the Association for Asian Studies (AAS), and Asia for Educators (AFE) at Columbia University announced the establishment of the annual Freeman Book Awards for new young adult and children’s literature. The awards recognize quality books for children and young adults that contribute meaningfully to an understanding of East and Southeast Asia. Awards are given in two categories: Children’s and Young Adult on the several countries of East and Southeast Asia. The awards were inaugurated in 2016. They are named for the Freeman Foundation. Mansfield Freeman
Mansfield Freeman was born in Waltham, Massachusetts on September 16, 1895, the son of Luther Freeman, a Methodist minister. He was one of the original management group that started an insurance business in China that became the American International Group (AIG). He also was a prominent scholar of Chinese philosophy and a generous philanthropist. He died on November 17, 1992, at his farm in Greensboro, Vermont at the age of 97. Freeman was also the founder of the Freeman Foundation. He was an alumnus of Wesleyan University in Connecticut, year of 1916. The Freeman Asian Scholarship was established at Wesleyan in his honor. In addition, his endowment established the Freeman Center for East Asian Studies at the university. Freeman's published works include an introduction to and translation of ''Preservation of Learning'' by Yan Yuan (Qing dynasty), Yen Yuan, a 17th-century Chinese philosopher. Kathryn Tanquary
Kathryn Tanquary is an American juvenile fiction author who lives and works in Japan. She is from Highlands Ranch, Colorado, and currently works as an editor for Edelman (firm), Edelman Japan. Tanquary studied creative writing at Knox College (Illinois), Knox College, where she graduated from in 2010. At Knox College, she was listed as a distinguished student on the Dean's list, Dean's List and the President's Circle. After attaining her degree, Tanquary taught English as a Foreign Language to middle school students in the Gunma Prefecture of Japan. In college, Tanquary wrote several short stories for adults. She has always been interested in Japanese folklore, which stimulated the concept for her debut novel, a juvenile fiction book titled ''The Night Parade'', which won the 2016 Freeman Awards, Freeman Book Award for Young Adult/Middle School Literature. The Night Parade
''The Night Parade'' (2016) is a juvenile fiction debut novel by Kathryn Tanquary, a middle-grade author and teacher of English as a foreign language in Gunma Prefecture, Japan. Tanquary’s ''The Night Parade'' is reminiscent of the 2001 Japanese anime fantasy film ''Spirited Away'' by Hayao Miyazaki. Misuzu Kaneko
was a Japanese poet, known for her poetry for children. She was born in the fishing village of Senzaki, now part of Nagato, Yamaguchi prefecture. Motifs of fishing and the sea often make appearances in her poems. Celebrated during her lifetime, her works fell into obscurity after her death, until being rediscovered in the 1980s. Since then, she has been regarded as one of Japan's most beloved children's poets. Kaneko has been compared to Christina Rossetti. Innosanto Nagara is a children's author, activist, and graphic designer. He is the author of the alphabet book '' A is for Activist'' as well as the other children's books ''Counting on Community'', ''My Night in the Planetarium'', and the newly released ''The Wedding Portrait''.
