Freedoms NZ
Freedoms New Zealand, also known as Freedoms NZ: Uniting Political Parties and Freedom Movements, is a registered political alliance in New Zealand, founded on 22 August 2022 by Brian Tamaki following a series of protests. Today it is co-led by Tamaki and Sue Grey. It is an "umbrella party", consisting of an alliance between Tamaki's Freedom and Rights Coalition organisation, the registered Vision NZ and Outdoors & Freedom parties, and the unregistered Yes Aotearoa and Rock The Vote NZ parties. In the 2023 New Zealand general election, Freedoms New Zealand received 0.33% of the party vote and did not win any electorate seats, so did not enter parliament. Formation and membership Freedoms NZ was founded by Brian Tamaki, and is the third political party he has been connected to. Destiny New Zealand, a party associated with Tamaki's Destiny Church, existed from 2003 to 2007 and did not succeed in any elections. Brian Tamaki
Brian Raymond Tamaki (born 2 February 1958), is a New Zealand fundamentalist Christian religious leader and far-right political activist. A Tainui man from the Ngati Ngawaero and Ngati Maniapoto tribes, he is the leader of Destiny Church, a pentecostal Christian organisation in New Zealand which advocates strict adherence to fundamentalist biblical morality, and is notable for its position against homosexuality, its patriarchal views, and for its calls for a return to biblical conservative family values and morals. He has also stated the COVID-19 pandemic is a sign the world has "strayed from God", which led to widespread condemnation, with one Anglican vicar describing Tamaki as "dangerous". This, alongside many comments he has made, and how he has amassed a large fortune by preaching the prosperity gospel to a mostly working-class audience, has made him a controversial figure in New Zealand. Freedom And Rights Coalition
The Freedoms & Rights Coalition (TFRC) is a self-described "people's movement" founded by Destiny Church (New Zealand), Destiny Church founder and leader Bishop Brian Tamaki in 2021 to oppose the New Zealand Government's COVID-19 lockdown restrictions and vaccine mandates. The group organised protests in Auckland and across New Zealand. In mid-July 2022, the Coalition launched a second wave of protests against the Sixth Labour Government of New Zealand, Labour Government, whom they accused of incompetence and contributing to the country's socio-economic problems and shortages.
