Fredi M. Murer
Fredi M. Murer (born 1 October 1940) is a Swiss filmmaker. Life and work Murer was born Alfred Melchior Murer in Beckenried, Switzerland. He grew up in Altdorf and went to university in Zurich, where he studied drawing and photography. He began making films in the mid-1960s. His most famous works are the films ''Alpine Fire'' (1985) and ''Vitus'' (2006). From 1992 to 1996, he was president of the Swiss Film-Makers Association. As an innovative and independent filmmaker, Murer has made a major contribution to the renaissance of Swiss cinema. Winner of the City of Zurich Arts Prize in 1995 and the Central Swiss Cultural Prize in 1997, in 2005 he was honoured by the Zurich Foundation for Western Ethics and Culture with a lifetime achievement award. This was the first time the prize had been conferred on a filmmaker, the position of his work in the world of the Swiss cinema being described as "exemplary for the power of its message". ''Alpine Fire'' (german: Höhenfeuer) is a 1985 Swiss drama film directed by Fredi M. Murer. It won the Golden Leopard at the 1985 Locarno International Film Festival. The film was selected as the Swiss entry for the Best Foreign Language Film at the 58th Academy Awards, but was not accepted as a nominee. Plot A year on an Alpine farm: an older couple have two children, Belli, who wanted to be a teacher until her father pulled her out of school, and the younger Bub, who is deaf and, although he works like a man, mentally childlike. Belli teaches him as the work his father asks him to do on the farm limits his ability to go to school. Part of his work is quarrying stones to build walls. In high summer, Bub becomes frustrated when a power mower stops working and throws it over a cliff. Vitus (film)
''Vitus'' is a drama film written and directed by Fredi M. Murer. It was released on 2 February 2006 in Switzerland. It stars real-life piano prodigy Teo Gheorghiu, Bruno Ganz, Julika Jenkins, and Urs Jucker. Plot Vitus, played by Teo Gheorghiu, is a highly gifted pianist at the age of 12. His parents mean well, but are over-protective, so Vitus rebels and seeks refuge with his grandfather (Bruno Ganz), who loves flying. After faking a head injury, Vitus secretly amasses a fortune on the stock market. The money allows his grandfather to purchase a Pilatus PC-6 and his father to return triumphantly to the company that fired him. Vitus pursues his former babysitter, Isabel, but she prefers someone older and does not return his affections. Vitus returns to his piano and performs Robert Schumann's Piano Concerto on stage with the Zurich Chamber Orchestra.
