Frederick Parkhurst Dodd
Frederick Parkhurst Dodd (11 March 1861 - 27 July 1937) was an Australian entomologist. He was known as the Butterfly Man of Kuranda. Born in Victoria, Dodd worked in a bank in Townsville, Queensland for ten years before taking up entomology full-time. A number of species are named after him and his collection of insects was of importance. He undertook collecting expeditions in New Guinea as well as Australia. The Taeniopterygidae genus Doddsia is named for him. Dodd's son Alan, and daughters Elizabeth and Katharine, continued the entomological tradition. Entomology () is the scientific study of insects, a branch of zoology. In the past the term "insect" was less specific, and historically the definition of entomology would also include the study of animals in other arthropod groups, such as arachnids, myriapods, and crustaceans. This wider meaning may still be encountered in informal use. Kuranda, Queensland
Kuranda is a rural town and locality on the Atherton Tableland in the Shire of Mareeba, Queensland, Australia. In the , Kuranda had a population of 3,008 people. It is from Cairns, via the Kuranda Range road. It is surrounded by tropical rainforest and adjacent to the Wet Tropics of Queensland World Heritage listed Barron Gorge National Park. The town of Myola is also located within the locality of Kuranda (). Townsville is a city on the north-eastern coast of Queensland, Australia.
