Frederick Neville Sutherland Leveson-Gower
Frederick Neville Sutherland Leveson-Gower (31 May 1874 – 9 April 1959), was a British Liberal Unionist Party politician from the Leveson-Gower family. Leveson-Gower was the son of Lord Albert Leveson-Gower, third son of George Sutherland-Leveson-Gower, 2nd Duke of Sutherland. His mother was Grace Emma Townshend Abdy, daughter of Sir Thomas Abdy, 1st Baronet, of Albyns, Sir Thomas Abdy, 1st Baronet. He entered Parliament for Sutherland (UK Parliament constituency), Sutherland in 1900, a seat he held until defeated by Alpheus Morton in the Liberal landslide of 1906. He was appointed a deputy lieutenant of Sutherland in 1905. Leveson-Gower married Blanche Lucie Gillard in 1916. He died in April 1959, aged 84. Sutherland (UK Parliament Constituency)
Sutherland was a Scottish constituency of the House of Commons of the Parliament of Great Britain from 1708 to 1801 and of the Parliament of the United Kingdom from 1801 to 1918. Creation The British parliamentary constituency was created in 1708 following the Acts of Union, 1707 and replaced the former Parliament of Scotland shire constituency of Sutherlandshire. Boundaries The constituency represented essentially the traditional county of Sutherland. The county town of Dornoch, however, was represented as a component of the Tain Burghs constituency, from 1708 to 1832, and of the Wick Burghs constituency, from 1832 to 1918. History The constituency elected one Member of Parliament (MP) by the first past the post system until the seat was abolished in 1918. In 1918 the Sutherland constituency and Dornoch were merged into the then new constituency of Caithness and Sutherland. John MacLeod (Sutherland Politician)
John Macleod, sometimes John Macleod of Gartymore, (8 August 1862 – 1 April 1931) was MP for Sutherland, representing the Crofters Party (allied to the Liberal Party). Macleod was born at Helmsdale in 1862 (though he often stated 1863 in later life), the son of John and Ann McLeod. His father was a fish-curer. He trained in Glasgow as an analytical chemist, then after further study in London worked for a Welsh gold-mining company at Gwynfynydd and Glasdir. They sent him to Sutherland in around 1882 to investigate the potential for gold mines at Kildonan, where there had been a minor gold rush in the late 1860s. While working there, he attended a public meeting of the Napier Commission and became active in the land reform movement. Through the 1880s, he campaigned for the Highland Land League, and was one of the founders of the Sutherland county branch of the movement. Alpheus Morton
Sir Alpheus Cleophas Morton (12 March 1840 – 26 April 1923) was a British architect and surveyor, and a Liberal Party politician. He was active in local government in London from the 1880s until his death, and sat in the House of Commons in two periods between 1889 and 1918. Career Morton was born in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, the son of Francis and Ann Morton, and considered himself Scottish. He was educated privately in Canada. He became an architect and surveyor, based in Chancery Lane in London. By 1885 he was living in Clapham, and was a member of the Wandsworth District Board of Works and president of the Clapham, Stockwell, and South Lambeth Water Consumers' Defence Association. He was a member of the City of London Corporation from 1882 until his death, for the ward of Farringdon Without. The Liberal Unionist Party was a British political party that was formed in 1886 by a faction that broke away from the Liberal Party. Led by Lord Hartington (later the Duke of Devonshire) and Joseph Chamberlain, the party established a political alliance with the Conservative Party in opposition to Irish Home Rule. Leveson-Gower ( ), also Sutherland-Leveson-Gower, is the name of a powerful British noble family. Over time, several members of the Leveson-Gower family were made knights, baronets and peers. George Granville Sutherland-Leveson-Gower, 2nd Duke of Sutherland, KG (8 August 178627 February 1861), styled Viscount Trentham until 1803, Earl Gower between 1803 and 1833 and Marquess of Stafford in 1833, was a British Whig MP and peer from the Leveson-Gower family. Early life Sutherland-Leveson-Gower was born at Portland Place, London, on 8 August 1786. and baptised at St Marylebone Parish Church. He was the eldest son of George Leveson-Gower, 1st Duke of Sutherland, and his wife Elizabeth Sutherland, ''suo jure'' Countess of Sutherland. He was educated at Harrow School from 1798 to 1803, then entered Christ Church, Oxford, where he graduated B.A. in 1806 and M.A. in 1810. In 1841 he graduated D.C.L. at the same university. Sir Thomas Neville Abdy, 1st Baronet, DL JP (21 December 1810 – 20 July 1877) was a British baronet and politician. Background He was the only son of Captain Anthony Abdy, a maternal greatgrandson of Sir William Abdy, 4th Baronet, and his wife Grace Rich, daughter of Sir Thomas Rich, 5th Baronet. Abdy was educated at Winchester Cathedral in Hampshire and at St John's College, Cambridge, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in 1833. He was then admitted to the Middle Temple. Sutherland
Sutherland ( gd, Cataibh) is a historic county, registration county and lieutenancy area in the Highlands of Scotland. Its county town is Dornoch. Sutherland borders Caithness and Moray Firth to the east, Ross-shire and Cromartyshire (later combined into Ross and Cromarty) to the south and the Atlantic to the north and west. Like its southern neighbour Ross-shire, Sutherland has some of the most dramatic scenery in Europe, especially on its western fringe where the mountains meet the sea. These include high sea cliffs, and very old mountains composed of Precambrian and Cambrian rocks. Duke of Sutherland is a title in the Peerage of the United Kingdom which was created by William IV in 1833 for George Leveson-Gower, 2nd Marquess of Stafford. A series of marriages to heiresses by members of the Leveson-Gower family made the Dukes of Sutherland one of the richest landowning families in the United Kingdom.
