Frederick Bernhard Albinus
Friedrich Bernhard Albinus or Frederik Bernard Albinus (20 June 1715 – 23 may 1778) was a Dutch anatomist. He was the fourth and youngest son of Bernhardus Albinus, and succeeded his brother Bernhard Siegfried Albinus (1697–1770) at the University of Leiden as professor of anatomy. Albinus was born in Leiden where he was educated. Matriculating in literature in 1731, he went to Leiden University and studied mathematics and philosophy under Willem 's Gravesande; botany under Adriaan van Royen; and medicine under Herman Boerhaave, his brother Bernhard and Hieronymus David Gaubius Hieronymus David Gaubius (24 February 1705 – 29 November 1780) was a German physician and chemist. Bernhardus Albinus
Bernhardus Friedrich Albinus (7 January 1653, Dessau – 7 September 1721, Leiden) was a Dutch physician and anatomist. His sons Bernhard Siegfried Albinus (1697–1770) and Friedrich Bernhard Albinus (1715-1778) were also anatomists of note in Leiden. Albinus was born in Dessau in the principality of Anhalt, where his father, Christoforus Albinus, was the mayor. His ancestral family name, Weiss, had been changed to Albinus in the 16th century, after the fashion of the time, by his ancestor Petrus Weiss, poet and historian. In his youth, a poor physical constitution led to his being schooled at home before being sent to the public school of his city. When the scientist Hendrik Alers, head of the school, was called to the famous school of Bremen in 1669, Albinus joined him. Bernhard Siegfried Albinus
Bernhard Siegfried Albinus (originally Weiss; 24 February 16979 September 1770) was a German-born Dutch anatomist. He served a professor of medicine at the University of Leiden like his father Bernhard Albinus (1653–1721). He also published a large-format artistic atlas of human anatomy, with engravings made by Jan Wandelaar. Biography Bernhard Siegfried Albinus was born at Frankfurt on the Oder where his father, Bernhard Albinus (1653–1721), was professor of the practice of medicine. In 1702 the latter was transferred to the chair of medicine at Leiden University, and it was there that Bernhard Siegfried began his studies in 1709, at the age of 12, having for his teachers such men as Boerhaave and Govert Bidloo. Willem 's Gravesande
Willem Jacob 's Gravesande (26 September 1688 – 28 February 1742) was a Dutch mathematician and natural philosopher, chiefly remembered for developing experimental demonstrations of the laws of classical mechanics and the first experimental measurement of kinetic energy. As professor of mathematics, astronomy, and philosophy at Leiden University, he helped to propagate Isaac Newton's ideas in Continental Europe. Life Born in 's-Hertogenbosch, 's Gravesande studied law at Leiden University, where he defended a thesis on suicide and earned a doctorate in 1707. Adriaan Van Royen
Adriaan van Royen (11 November 1704 in Leiden – 28 February 1779 in Leiden) was a Dutch botanist. He was a professor at Leiden University and is associated with Carl Linnaeus. He is best known for his work on flora of Southeast Asia. Adriaan van Royen formed a close relationship with Linnaeus, who had visited the Leiden Botanic Garden during a stay in Leiden between 1737 and 1738. Herman Boerhaave
Herman Boerhaave (, 31 December 1668 – 23 September 1738Underwood, E. Ashworth. "Boerhaave After Three Hundred Years." ''The British Medical Journal'' 4, no. 5634 (1968): 820–25. https://www.jstor.org/stable/20395297.) was a Dutch botanist, chemist, Christian humanist, and physician of European fame. He is regarded as the founder of clinical teaching and of the modern academic hospital and is sometimes referred to as "the father of physiology," along with Venetian physician Santorio Santorio (1561–1636). Boerhaave introduced the quantitative approach into medicine, along with his pupil Albrecht von Haller (1708–1777) and is best known for demonstrating the relation of symptoms to lesions. Hieronymus David Gaubius
Hieronymus David Gaubius (24 February 1705 – 29 November 1780) was a German physician and chemist. Life He was a native of Heidelberg. He studied medicine and sciences at the Universities of University of Harderwijk, Harderwijk and University of Leiden, Leiden, where he was a pupil of Hermann Boerhaave (1668–1738) and Bernhard Siegfried Albinus (1697–1770). He earned his degree at Leiden in 1725 with a thesis on psychosomatic medicine called . After graduation he continued his training in Paris, and then practiced medicine in Amsterdam and Deventer. In 1731 Gaubius was invited to Leiden by Boerhaave as a lecturer in chemistry, and in 1734 he became a full professor of medicine and chemistry. Gaubius isolated menthol in 1771. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1764.
