Frederic Remington High School
Frederic Remington High School is a rural public high school located north of Brainerd, Kansas between Whitewater and Potwin at NW Meadowlark Rd and NW 90th St. It is one of three schools operated by Remington USD 206 public school district. This school is also commonly known as Remington High School as the shorter name, and Whitewater-Remington High School on KSHSAA sport lists. History In 1961, Whitewater, Potwin, Brainerd, Elbing, Furley, Countryside, and Golden Gate schools merged to form a joint rural high school. Heated opposition between Whitewater and Potwin occurred during the discussion for the location of the new high school. Rural voters pushed for a centralized location in neither town. A public vote was taken to determine if the school should be built halfway between Whitewater and Potwin, near Brainerd, which passed 745 "yes" to 155 "no". The Bronco Buster
''The Bronco Buster'' (also ''The Broncho Buster'' per convention at the time of sculpting) is a sculpture made of bronze copyrighted in 1895 by American artist Frederic Remington. It portrays a rugged cowboy character fighting to stay aboard a rearing, plunging bronco, with a stirrup swinging free, a quirt in one hand and a fistful of mane and reins in the other. It was the first and remains the most popular of all of Remington's sculptures. The sculpture was executed in the summer of 1895, and later that fall it was copyrighted with the United States Copyright Office. He took his subject from a number of his former sketches. The earliest one was ''A Bucking Bronco'', an illustration to Theodore Roosevelt's article in the March 1888 issue of ''Century Magazine'' entitled "The Home Ranch". A bucking horse is any breed or either gender of horse with a propensity to buck. They have been, and still are, referred to by various names, including bronco, broncho, and roughstock. The harder they buck, the more desirable they are for rodeo events. Roughstock breeders have long established strings of bucking horses with broodmares and stallions that have been bred and crossbred to more consistently produce the desired temperaments and athletic ability needed for bareback and saddle bronc competition. Hattie Horner Louthan (1865 – 1950) was an American writer. She was the author of five books and contributed to newspapers and magazines. Early years and education Hattie Horner was born at Muscatine, Iowa, but lived nearly all her life in Whitewater, Kansas, Whitewater, Butler County, Kansas. She was a graduate of her town's high school, as well as of the class of 1883 of the Kansas State Normal School, Emporia, Kansas. Career Louthan taught for five years, and served as principal of the Arkansas City, Kansas, Arkansas City and El Dorado, Kansas, El Dorado high schools. The Kansas State High School Activities Association (KSHSAA) is the organization which oversees interscholastic competition in the U.S. state of Kansas at the high-school level. It oversees both athletic and non-athletic competition, and sponsors championships in several sports and activities. History The Kansas State High School Activities Association was formed in 1937 and incorporated in 1956. As early as 1910, Kansas schools organized the statewide Debate League and Athletic Association governed by high school principals. The Athletic Association started as a small voluntary group of fewer than 50 schools and grew to more than 500 schools by the 1920s. Out of necessity, the member schools adopted eligibility and participation rules and established authority for a Board of Control to assess penalties against schools for violations. Furley is an unincorporated community in Sedgwick County, Kansas, United States. As of the 2020 census, the population of the community and nearby areas was 39. It is located northwest of the intersection of Greenwich Road and 101st Street N, along the Union Pacific Railroad. History 19th century In 1887, the Chicago, Kansas and Nebraska Railway built a branch line north–south from Herington through Furley to Caldwell. By 1893, this branch line was incrementally built to Fort Worth, Texas. It foreclosed in 1891 and was taken over by Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railway, which shut down in 1980 and reorganized as Oklahoma, Kansas and Texas Railroad, merged in 1988 with Missouri Pacific Railroad, and finally merged in 1997 with Union Pacific Railroad.
