Fred Thomas (bassist)
Fred Thomas is an American bassist best known for his work with singer James Brown for over thirty years. He performed on many R&B hits of the 1970s. His last recording is on the 2018 album ''We Came to Play''. Career Thomas grew up in the US state of Georgia. He moved to New York City in 1965 and co-founded his own band with guitarist Hearlon "Cheese" Martin. He was the bassist as well as the lead vocalist of the group. He said: "I did my own thing, which is to keep a nice bottom in the pocket. I never bothered with any fancy stuff because I always did the singing in my bands, and you can't be fancy and sing". In 1971 James Brown saw the band at Smalls Paradise club in Harlem. Brown was in search of new musicians for his own band. He did an impromptu performance with the band and decided to hire the whole group. Thomas said his band used to cover Brown's songs and that joining Brown was a smooth transition for them. "Hot Pants (She Got to Use What She Got to Get What She Wants)" is a funk song by James Brown. Brown recorded the song in 1971 and released it that year as a three-part single on his People Records label, which was then distributed by his primary label King. It was a number-one R&B hit and reached number fifteen on the ''Billboard'' Hot 100 pop chart in the U.S. along with reaching number ten on the ''Cashbox'' magazine charts. "Hot Pants" was Brown's final release under King's purview before he (and the People label) moved to Polydor Records. The song's lyrics are an ode to the captivating power of the title garment, which members of the band first saw on their 1970 European tour. Like much of Brown's funk repertoire, "Hot Pants" has been extensively sampled in hip hop productions. Culture are a Jamaican roots reggae group founded in 1976. Originally they were known as the African Disciples. The one constant member until his death in 2006 was Joseph Hill. "Doing It to Death", also known as "Gonna Have a Funky Good Time", is a funk song recorded by The J.B.'s featuring James Brown. A 10-minute, two-part version of "Doing It to Death" was included on a J.B.'s album of the same name. The complete, unedited and nearly 13-minute-long original recording of the song was first issued on the 1995 J.B.'s compilation ''Funky Good Time: The Anthology''. Performances of the song also appear on the albums ''Live at Chastain Park'' and ''Live at the Apollo 1995''. Background Although the song has a lead vocal by Brown (who also wrote the tune and the lyrics), the recording is credited to "Fred Wesley & The J.B.'s". Alan Leeds (born January 26, 1947) is an American music executive, tour manager, production manager, writer and archivist best known for his work organizing performances and concert tours for artists such as James Brown, Prince, KISS, Cameo, D'Angelo and Chris Rock. In addition to his career in management for artists, Leeds is recognized as an award-winning writer and music archivist. Leeds received a Grammy Award for Best Album Notes in 1992 for his work on the James Brown compilation '' Star Time''. Leeds also penned the liner notes for the 1993 Prince box set ''The Hits/The B-Sides'', and cowrote ''The James Brown Reader'' with Nelson George. Alan Leeds was born in Jackson Heights, New York. The album includes a ten-minute version of the #1 R&B hit "Doing It to Death", which is led by Danny Ray's introduction to simulate his MC in concerts. ''The Payback'' is the 37th studio album by American musician James Brown. The album was released in December 1973, by Polydor Records. It was originally scheduled to become the soundtrack for the blaxploitation film '' Hell Up in Harlem'', but was rejected by the film's producers, who dismissed it as "the same old James Brown stuff." A widely repeated story—including by Brown himself—that director Larry Cohen rejected the music as "not funky enough" is denied by Cohen. On the DVD commentary track for '' Black Caesar'' (to which ''Hell Up in Harlem'' is a sequel), Cohen states that executives at American International Pictures were already unhappy with Brown for delivering songs much longer than expected on ''Black Caesar'' and '' Slaughter's Big Rip-Off'' and opted for a deal with Motown Records instead. ''Revolution of the Mind: Live at the Apollo, Volume III'' is a live double album by James Brown released in 1971. As its subtitle suggests, it is Brown's third album recorded at the Apollo Theater, following the original '' Live at the Apollo'' (1963) and ''Live at the Apollo, Volume II'' (1968). After a triple album project recorded in France was cancelled because Brown had signed with a new label, Polydor, in 1971, Brown elected to do many of the same songs on a New York project. Unlike the cancelled live album, this was assembled from the best live takes from a week of shows, at the Apollo. Unlike previous releases live albums, this was criticized for poor sound balance and excessive eroticism.
