Fred Roberts (American Football Guard)
Fred Everett Roberts (March 18, 1907 – January 17, 1982) was an American football player. He played college football for the University of Iowa where he was a member of Sigma Pi fraternity, vice president of the junior class, and a member of the track team. In 1928 and 1929 he was voted All-Big Ten and in 1929 was voted a United Press All-American. In the National Football League (NFL), he played as a guard for the Portsmouth Spartans The professional American football team now known as the Detroit Lions previously played in Portsmouth, Ohio, as the Portsmouth Spartans, from its founding in 1928 to its relocation to Detroit in 1934. Sigma Pi () is a collegiate fraternity with 233 chapters at American universities. As of 2021, the fraternity had more than 5,000 undergraduate members and over 110,000 alumni. Sigma Pi headquarters are in Nashville, Tennessee. The fraternity was founded on February 26, 1897, by William R Kennedy, James T Kingsbury, George M Patterson, and Rolin R James at Vincennes University. The group was initially known by the Greek letters Tau Phi Delta (ΤΦΔ), but was renamed Sigma Pi in 1907. The change of name was instigated by Robert George Patterson, then a student at Ohio State University.
