Frederick Martin (1830–1883) was a British writer of Swiss-German background, known as the editor of '' The Statesman's Year Book''. Life Born at Geneva, Switzerland, on 19 November 1830, Martin was educated at Heidelberg. He settled in England at an early age. For some years after 1856 he was secretary and amanuensis to Thomas Carlyle, whom he helped in historical researches. In 1879 Lord Beaconsfield, who found ''The Statesman's Year-Book'' useful, awarded Martin a pension of £100 a year. He died on 27 January 1883 at his house in Lady Margaret Road, in north-west London, leaving a widow and family. Works Martin started a short-lived biographical magazine called ''The Statesman'', in which he began an account of Carlyle's early life. Carlyle objected, so Martin closed it down. He inaugurated ''The Statesman's Year-Book'' in 1864. He continued to supervise it till December 1882, when he was compelled by ill-health to give it up, and it was taken over by John Scott Keltie. ... Frederick Townsend Martin (December 6, 1849 – March 8, 1914) was a New York City writer, advocate for the poor, and an acknowledged leader of society in New York. He was referred to as a "millionaire with a mission." Early life Martin was born in Albany, New York on December 6, 1849 to Henry Hull Martin (1809–1886) and Anna Townsend (1815–1866). His maternal grandfather was Solomon Townsend, a prominent merchant in Albany, and his siblings were Henry Townsend Martin (d. 1915), Bradley Martin (1841–1913), who married Cornelia Sherman, Howard Townsend Martin, and Alice Townsend. His niece, Bradley's daughter, Cornelia Martin (1877-1961), married William Craven, 4th Earl of Craven (1868–1921). Family and education Martin was born in Peterhead in Aberdeenshire, the third son of William Martin and Agnes Clark. He was educated at Peterhead Academy. Frederick Leroy Martin (November 22, 1882 – February 23, 1954) was an American airman best known as the first commander of the US Army Air Service's first aerial circumnavigation of the world in 1924 and as the commander of US Army Air Forces during the Attack on Pearl Harbor. Martin, a Major at the time, commanded the circumnavigation and piloted the Douglas World Cruiser ''Seattle'', until he crashed in a remote portion of the Alaskan Aleutian Peninsula, after which he relinquished command to Lt Lowell Smith. Martin received the Distinguished Service Medal for his part in the circumnavigation. By the beginning of World War II, Martin had been promoted to Major General and assigned to command the Hawaiian Air Force of two Wings ( 18th Bombardment Wing at Hickam Field and 14th Pursuit Wing at Wheeler Field) and outlying airfields at Bellows Field and Haleiwa Fighter Strip. Fred George Martin (13 May 1929 – 20 August 2013) was a Scottish professional footballer, who played as a goalkeeper. His only senior club was Aberdeen, with whom he played for 14 years. He also represented Scotland during their first FIFA World Cup finals appearance in 1954. Club career Originally signed from Carnoustie Panmure as an inside forward, Martin was converted into a goalkeeper during his period of National Service. He made his Aberdeen debut in his new position in a 3–1 defeat by East Fife in 1949–50, scoring an own goal when he fumbled a last minute cross into his net.
