Fred M. Packard Award
The IUCN World Commission on Protected Areas, WCPA Fred M. Packard Award is an international merit award which is made by the International Union for Conservation of Nature to individuals or groups in recognition of "outstanding service to protected and conserved areas" across the globe. The award is named for the individual who served as the Secretary to the World Commission on Protected Areas in the early 1970s. Packard initially established the award in recognition of the "valour" of field wardens fighting and at times losing their lives to poachers in the course of conservation work, mostly in the developing world. At the third World National Parks Congress in Bali, 1982 the award was expanded to include people and organisations who have "contributed to protected areas far above and beyond the call of duty". IUCN
The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN; officially International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources) is an international organization working in the field of nature conservation and sustainable use of natural resources. It is involved in data gathering and analysis, research, field projects, advocacy, and education. IUCN's mission is to "influence, encourage and assist societies throughout the world to conserve nature and to ensure that any use of natural resources is equitable and ecologically sustainable". Over the past decades, IUCN has widened its focus beyond conservation ecology and now incorporates issues related to sustainable development in its projects. IUCN does not itself aim to mobilize the public in support of nature conservation.
