Fred Gentry
Frederick Paul Gentry (born July 7, 1977) was a professional basketball player in Portugal and Angola and is now a coach in Lobos da Malveira. An American and a McNeese State Cowboys graduate, Gentry achieved greater success abroad, winning the African Club Champions in 2006 with Petro de Luanda. In Portugal, he collected over 20 honours, including four league titles. Career Born in San Diego, California, Gentry started playing basketball at DeQuincy Highschool, in DeQuincy Louisiana earning a scholarship at McNeese State University. He competed in the NCAA Division I, with the Cowboys under coach Tic Price in his last year as senior, averaging 10.8 points per game, as the ''Cowboys'' lost in the Midwest Regional to the Bulldogs. Undrafted, Gentry moved to Europe, starting his professional career in the Portuguese League, playing one season on the Azorean team, Lusitânia, before he moved to Ginásio da Figueira. Liga Portuguesa De Basquetebol
The Liga Portuguesa de Basquetebol ( en, Portuguese Basketball League), also known as Liga Betclic for sponsorship reasons, is the top men's professional club basketball league in Portugal. History From the 2008–09 season onward, the competition has been again organised by the Federação Portuguesa de Basquetebol (Portuguese Basketball Federation) after not having been for 13 seasons. This was caused by the fold of the LPB after many years of financial problems, with the league now being a semi-professional league. Between the 1965–66 and 1973–74 seasons, the league champions were determined by a tournament between the winners of the Campeonato Metropolitano (representing Portugal) and the champions of the then Portuguese colonies Mozambique and Angola, as a similar fashion to the Portuguese Roller Hockey First Division, which was also played during those seasons. The 2007 FIBA Africa Basketball Club Championship (22nd edition), was an international basketball tournament held in the cities of Cabinda (Group A), Huambo (Group B) and Luanda (Knockout stage), Angola, from December 13 to 22, 2007. EuroBasket, also commonly referred to as the European Basketball Championship, is the main international basketball competition that is contested quadrennially, by the senior men's national teams that are governed by FIBA Europe, which is the European zone within the International Basketball Federation. The competition was first held in 1935. The former Soviet Union holds the record for most gold medals with a total of 14. António Pratas Trophy
The Troféu António Pratas (English: ''António Pratas Trophy'') is an annual cup competition for Portuguese basketball teams organized by the Portuguese Basketball Federation. Created in 2007 to honour António Pratas, its first edition was only open to Proliga clubs. A year later, it expanded to include teams from the Liga Portuguesa de Basquetebol and has since established itself as a "curtain-raiser" for the season. Played in early October in two different levels, Proliga and LPB, each winner receives a trophy for their respective competition. After the inaugural season won by Benfica, its second had six winners in the three different regions. Its third year was a one-off edition were both leagues played together.
