Fred Curatolo
Fred Curatolo (born 1958) is a freelance editorial cartoonist. Born in Toronto, Ontario, Curatolo studied at the esteemed visual arts program at C.W. Jefferys Collegiate Institute from 1974 to 1978. After encouragement from an instructor, he began serious editorial cartooning in 1982, and was first published in 1983 at the Toronto Sun. Curatolo started his cartooning full-time at the Brampton Guardian in 1986. In 1989, Fred moved to Edmonton, Alberta to join the Edmonton Sun as staff editorial cartoonist and continued this position until 2006. Having been published in numerous papers across Canada, Fred's work was also featured in the former local weekly See Magazine. Currently he is drawing for the St. Albert Leader. Influences An avid comic book collector, Curatolo states that his main influences have been from Jack Davis and Mort Drucker of Mad magazine, along with Will Eisner. ''SEE Magazine'' was a free alternative weekly published in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada from 1992-2011 first by Ron Garth, then by Great West Newspapers, Great West Newspaper. It was published every Thursday, distributing an average of 20,849 copies each week at more than 1,250 locations including street boxes, libraries, and local retail stores. It covered a range of topics not typically represented through mainstream media, highlighting underrepresented artists and events. In 2011, it was acquired by Bob Doull of Aberdeen Publishing and merged with rival alt-weekly, Vue Weekly. The last issue, issue 913, was published on May 26, 2011. Andy Donato
Andy Donato is an editorial cartoonist and former art director for the ''Toronto Sun''. Life and career Donato graduated from Danforth Collegiate and Technical Institute and worked at Eaton's as a layout artist. He joined the ''Toronto Telegram'' in 1961, working as a graphic artist in the promotion department. In 1968, he was appointed art director and began cartooning on a part-time basis. After ''The Telegram'' folded in 1971, he joined ''The Toronto Sun''. In 1974, he started cartooning full-time. In 1985 and 1986, he served as president of the Association of American Editorial Cartoonists. He is well known among ''Sun'' readers for his signature image of a bird, "Donato's bird." Finding the bird, lost in the newspaper, has been a common device in ''Sun'' promotions through the years. Will Eisner
William Erwin Eisner (March 6, 1917 – January 3, 2005) was an American cartoonist, writer, and entrepreneur. He was one of the earliest cartoonists to work in the American comic book industry, and his series ''The Spirit'' (1940–1952) was noted for its experiments in content and form. In 1978, he popularized the term "graphic novel" with the publication of his book ''A Contract with God''. He was an early contributor to formal comics studies with his book '' Comics and Sequential Art'' (1985). Morris "Mort" Drucker (March 22, 1929 – April 9, 2020) was an American caricaturist and comics artist best known as a contributor for over five decades in '' Mad'', where he specialized in satires on the leading feature films and television series. Personal life Drucker was born in Brooklyn, New York City, with some sources listing his birth date as March 22, 1929, and others as March 29. He was the son of Sarah (Spielvogel), a homemaker, and Edward Drucker, a businessman. His family was Jewish. He attended Brooklyn's Erasmus Hall High School. John Burton Davis Jr. (December 2, 1924 – July 27, 2016) was an American cartoonist and illustrator, known for his advertising art, magazine covers, film posters, record album art and numerous comic book stories. He was one of the founding cartoonists for ''Mad (magazine), Mad'' in 1952. His cartoon characters are characterized by extremely distorted anatomy, including big heads, skinny legs and large feet. Early life Davis was born December 2, 1924, in Atlanta, Georgia. As a child, he adored listening to Bob Hope on the radio and tried to draw him, despite not knowing what Hope looked like.
