Fred C. Britton
Frederick Christian Britton (21 May 1889 – 14 December 1931) was an artist and arts educator in South Australia and New South Wales. History Britton was born in Peckham, London and studied painting at the Brook Green School of Art, then the Slade School of Fine Art, London under Professor Henry Tonks and the Hammersmith School of Arts and Crafts. In 1908 he served as official artist for Flinders Petrie's archaeological expedition to Egypt and moved to Adelaide, South Australia in 1910 or 1911, and joined the staff of the South Australian School of Art under J. Christie Wright, then in 1916 served as his replacement when he went off to war. He enlisted in April 1918 and served as an official War Artist, in the same unit as Web Gilbert and Louis McCubbin. He returned to Adelaide and for a time worked for publishers Tyrrell's Ltd., then in August 1921 was appointed by Edith Napier Birks as founding painting master of the School of Fine Arts, North Adelaide. The National Art School (NAS) is a tertiary level art school, located in , an inner-city suburb of Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. The school is an independent accredited higher education provider offering specialised study in studio arts practice across various disciplines. With its origins in the formation of Sydney Mechanics’ School of Arts in 1843, NAS has been in operation on the historic Darlinghurst Gaol site in East Sydney in various forms since 1922 and was formerly part of East Sydney Technical College, known as East Sydney Tech. ''The Herald'' was a weekly trade union magazine published in Adelaide, South Australia between 1894 and March 1910; for the first four years titled ''The Weekly Herald''. It was succeeded by ''The Daily Herald'', which ran from 7 March 1910 to 16 June 1924. History The 1890s was a period of intense industrial unrest in Australia: squatters and shippers, manufacturers, merchants and miners had all been doing very nicely in the 1880s with exports booming, but little seemed to the shearers, labourers and sailors to be "trickling down" to them. Then around 1885 demand slackened off and with falling prices, the employers felt the need to reduce their labour force, and cut the wages of those who remained. Raukkan is an Australian Aboriginal community situated on the south-eastern shore of Lake Alexandrina in the locality of Narrung, southeast of the centre of South Australia's capital, Adelaide. Raukkan is "regarded as the home and heartland of Ngarrindjeri country." It was originally established as Point McLeay mission in 1859 and became an Aboriginal reserve in 1916. It was finally handed back to the Ngarrindjeri people in 1974, and renamed Raukkan in 1982. The Art Gallery of South Australia (AGSA), established as the National Gallery of South Australia in 1881, is located in Adelaide. It is the most significant visual arts museum in the Australian state of South Australia.
