John Florence Sullivan (May 31, 1894 – March 17, 1956), known professionally as Fred Allen, was an American comedian. His absurdist, topically pointed radio program ''The Fred Allen Show'' (1932–1949) made him one of the most popular and forward-looking humorists in the Golden Age of American radio. His best-remembered gag was his long-running mock feud with friend and fellow comedian Jack Benny, but it was only part of his appeal; radio historian John Dunning (in ''On the Air: The Encyclopedia of Old-Time Radio'') wrote that Allen was perhaps radio's most admired comedian and most frequently censored. Frederick Madison Allen (16 March 1879 – 14 April 1957) was a physician who is best remembered for his carbohydrate-restricted low-calorie diet for sufferers of diabetes mellitus. He was known for pioneering the "starvation diet". Life Born in Iowa, Allen studied medicine in California and obtained a fellowship at Harvard University to work on sugar consumption. He soon became obsessed with diabetes. In 1913, he privately printed a 1179-page book on diabetes that described hundreds of animal experiments and featured a 1200-item bibliography. He was appointed to a junior position at the Rockefeller Institute in 1914. Diabetes treatment Allen believed that previous diabetic treatments had been ineffective because they attempted to substitute fats for carbohydrates. Frederick Esmond Allen (born 28 July 1935) is a former English cricketer who played for Durham County Cricket Club. Having made his recorded Minor Counties Championship debut in 1960, he played one further match before taking a break from 1962, in which he played no Minor Counties matches, to 1965. A top order batsman, he made his name as a number 3 batsman and occasional off spin bowler. Durham were only awarded first-class status in 1991. Prior to this they played as a "Minor County" against several of the first-class counties' Second XI. Allen's greatest bowling performance was in his third Minor County match, against Warwickshire Second XI taking seven wickets for 53 runs. This was not enough to win the match, as Durham were unable to match Warwickshire's 223, losing the match by an innings and 23 runs. Sir Frederick Richard Allen (9 February 1920 – 28 April 2012) was a captain and coach of the All Blacks, New Zealand's national rugby union team. The All Blacks won all 14 of the test matches they played under his coaching. Personal life Allen was born in Oamaru, New Zealand. He was educated in Christchurch (though he did not attend secondary school), and played for the Linwood club. After captaining the Canterbury Colts in 1938, he was selected for Canterbury Rugby Football Union, Canterbury in 1939. During World War II Allen served as a lieutenant in the 27th and 30th Battalions in the Pacific and Italy. He played for service teams including the 2nd NZEF "Kiwis" Army team that toured Britain following the war. One of the most prominent sculptors in Boston during the early 20th century and a master teacher at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Allen had a career in the arts that spanned more than 50 years. Early years Allen was born May 5, 1888 in North Attleboro, Massachusetts, the son of Frank West Allen, a jewelry maker, and Esther Belcher Allen. Frederick N. Allen (August 10, 1914 – November 11, 2001) was an American politician from Maine. Allen, a Republican from Portland, served two terms in the Maine House of Representatives (1944-1948) and twice in the Maine Senate (1948-1952). He served as the national president of the National Association of Regulatory Utility Commissioners, an association of state commissioners of public utilities. He was appointed by Governor Frederick G. Payne to the Maine Public Utilities Commission, which regulates the various utilities of the state of Maine. Allen managed Burton M. Cross's successful first campaign for governor in 1952. He was also an early supporter of U.S. Senator Margaret Chase Smith. In 2002, he supported Democrat Chellie Pingree for U.S. Senate.
