Fray Felix Huerta
Felix Huerta, O.F.M., was a Spanish Franciscan friar, Catholic priest, scholar and missionary to the Philippines during the 19th century, when it was still a colony of Spain. He is best known for authoring a history of local Catholic parishes which is now a critical tool for Philippine historians. He was also the founder of Manila's Monte de Piedad Savings and Mortgage Bank, and was instrumental in the establishment of Manila's first water system. As historical chronicler Huerta is best known today as the author of ''Estado geográfico, topográfico, estadístico, histórico- religioso de la santa y apostólica Provincia de San Gregorio Magno'' ("Geographical, topographical, statistical, historical and religious state of the holy and apostolicprovince of St. Gregory the Great"), a record of the histories of Franciscan missions which is now a primary resource for local histories of Philippine municipalities. Franciscan
The Franciscans are a group of related Mendicant orders, mendicant Christianity, Christian Catholic religious order, religious orders within the Catholic Church. Founded in 1209 by Italian Catholic friar Francis of Assisi, these orders include three independent orders for men (the Order of Friars Minor being the largest contemporary male order), orders for women religious such as the Order of Saint Clare, and the Third Order of Saint Francis open to male and female members. They adhere to the teachings and spiritual disciplines of the founder and of his main associates and followers, such as Clare of Assisi, Anthony of Padua, and Elizabeth of Hungary. Francisco Carriedo
Francisco Carriedo y Peredo (November 7, 1690 – September 1743) was a Basque military officer, politician, and philanthropist. He was a general of the Santa Familia galleon and served as Capitán General of the Philippines. In 1713, Carriedo was recorded to be the master of the Santo Cristo de Burgos galleon. Carriedo is known for being the benefactor of Manila's pipe water system. As a retired Spanish Captain General in December 1733, he donated ten thousand pesos drawn from his fortune from the Acapulco-Manila investments. This donation was to the city and commercial interests of Manila and was for the establishment of waterworks for the benefit of the poor in the city. As nothing happened to this offer, he again bequeathed in a will dated July 27, 1743, the same amount and for the same purpose, with the stipulation that the fund was to be kept separate and devoted to the establishment, erection, and maintenance of waterworks. Santander, Spain
Santander () is the capital of the autonomous community and historical region of Cantabria situated on the north coast of Spain. It is a port city located east of Gijón and west of Bilbao with a population of 172,000 (2017). It is believed to have been a port since ancient times, due to its favorable location, and is documented as far back as the 11th century. Much of the medieval city was lost in the Great Fire of 1941. Leprosy, also known as Hansen's disease (HD), is a long-term infection by the bacteria ''Mycobacterium leprae'' or ''Mycobacterium lepromatosis''.
