Frauenchiemsee
The island Frauenchiemsee, often called Fraueninsel (), is the second largest of the three islands in Chiemsee, Germany. It belongs to the municipality of Chiemsee in the Upper Bavarian district of Rosenheim, which is the smallest municipality in all of Bavaria. The large and car-free Fraueninsel houses a convent of Benedictine nuns, which is usually called , as well as 300 permanent residents. History The monastery was founded in 782 by Tassilo III, Duke of Bavaria, making Frauenwörth the eldest German speaking convent beyond the alps. It was called ''Schönau'' in the ''Notitia de servitio monasteriorum''. In 850, Blessed Irmengard was the first known abbess. The minster is dedicated to the Purification of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Chiemsee
Chiemsee () is a freshwater lake in Bavaria, Germany, near Rosenheim. It is often called "the Bavarian Sea". The rivers Tiroler Achen and Prien flow into the lake from the south, and the river Alz flows out towards the north. The Alz flows into the Inn which then merges with the Danube. The Chiemsee is divided into the bigger, north section, in the northeast, called , and the , in the southwest. The Chiemgau, the region surrounding the Chiemsee, is a popular recreation area. Origin The Chiemsee was formed, like many other pre-alpine lakes, at the end of the last ice age about 10,000 years ago from a hollow carved out by a glacier (a ). Irmgard of Chiemsee (german: Selige Irmgard, also ''Irmengard''; – 16 July 866), a member of the Carolingian dynasty, was the second daughter of King Louis the German and his wife Hemma. She was the first abbess of Frauenwörth abbey from 857 until her death. Life Born at King Louis' court in Regensburg, Bavaria, young Irmgard, like her sisters, was destined for a monastic life. She was raised at the Benedictine abbey of Buchau in Swabia, whose estates she later received from the hands of her father. Gstadt am Chiemsee is a municipality in the district of Rosenheim, Bavaria, Germany. It is located on lake Chiemsee. Ferdinand Jodl
Ferdinand Alfred Friedrich Jodl (28 November 1896 – 9 June 1956) was a German general during World War II who commanded the Mountain Corps Norway during the Petsamo–Kirkenes Offensive. He was the younger brother of Alfred Jodl, Chief of the Operations Staff of the OKW. Life and career Ferdinand Jodl entered the German Army in August 1914 as an ensign, serving as a Lieutenant in a Bavarian Field Artillery Regiment from 1915 until the end of World War I. He remained in the army after 1918, becoming a general staff officer. In this capacity he served with XII Corps in the early part of World War II, then moving to XXXXIX Mountain Corps. From 1942 he served in Finland and North Norway, first as chief of staff of the 20th Mountain Army, then as commander of the XIX Mountain Corps, receiving the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross for his command of this corps in January 1945. Rosenheim is a ''Landkreis'' (district) in the south of Bavaria, Germany. Herrenchiemsee
Herrenchiemsee is a complex of royal buildings on Herreninsel, the largest island in the Chiemsee lake, in southern Bavaria, Germany. Together with the neighbouring isle of Frauenchiemsee and the uninhabited Krautinsel, it forms the municipality of Chiemsee, located about southeast of Munich. The island, formerly the site of an Augustinian monastery, was purchased by King Ludwig II of Bavaria in 1873. The king had the premises converted into a residence, known as the Old Palace (''Altes Schloss''). From 1878 onwards, he had the New Herrenchiemsee Palace (''Neues Schloss'') erected, based on the model of Versailles. Alfred Josef Ferdinand Jodl (; 10 May 1890 – 16 October 1946) was a German ''Generaloberst'' who served as the chief of the Operations Staff of the '' Oberkommando der Wehrmacht'' – the German Armed Forces High Command – throughout World War II. After the war, Jodl was indicted on charges of conspiracy to commit crimes against peace, planning, initiating and waging wars of aggression, war crimes and crimes against humanity at the Allied-organised Nuremberg trials. The ''Notitia de servitio monasteriorum'' ("Notice of the Service of Monasteries") is a list of monasteries in the Frankish Empire and the services they owed the crown. It was compiled under Emperor Louis the Pious in 819, probably as a summation of the royal reform of the monasteries carried out following the councils of 816 and 817.
