Frating Green
Frating is a village and small civil parish of the Tendring district of Essex, England. It is about east of Colchester and northwest of Clacton-on-Sea. The parish includes the settlements of Frating Green and Hockley. The parish church (dedication not recorded) is now a private house. The living was a rectory shared with Thorrington. The village hall is the Frating War Memorial Hall and Institute which celebrated its 100th Anniversary in September 2022. Tendring District
Tendring District is a local government district in north-east Essex, England. It extends from the River Stour in the north, to the coast and the River Colne in the south, with the coast to the east and the city of Colchester to the west. Its council is based in Clacton-on-Sea. Towns in the district include Frinton-on-Sea, Walton-on-the-Naze, Brightlingsea and Harwich. Large villages in the district include St Osyth and Great Bentley. Sometimes referred to as the ''Tendring Peninsula'', the district was formed on 1 April 1974 by a merger of the borough of Harwich with Brightlingsea Urban District, Clacton and Frinton and Walton urban districts, and Tendring Rural District. Holland-on-Sea
Holland-on-Sea is a seaside town in east Essex in England. Located south of the little village of Great Holland and directly north of Clacton-on-Sea, it has bus links to Walton-on-the-Naze and Clacton-on-Sea. It is a short coastal walk down the coastline to Clacton. St Osyth is an English village and civil parish in the Tendring District of north-east Essex, about west of Clacton-on-Sea and south-east of Colchester. It lies on the B1027, Colchester–Clacton road. The village is named after Osgyth, a 7th-century saint and princess. Locally, the name is sometimes pronounced "Toosey". It is claimed to be the driest recorded place in the United Kingdom. History Before being renamed after the Abbey of St Osgyth built there in the 12th century, the village was called ''Chich'' (also spelt ''Chiche'' or ''Chick''), from an Old English word ''cic'' meaning "bend", a reference to St Osyth Creek. Alresford ( or ) is a village and electoral ward in Essex, England. It is centred southeast of Colchester and is northeast from the county town of Chelmsford. The village and its civil parish are the district of Tendring. The local primary school is Alresford Primary School (~150 pupils, ages 4–11) and the village has a pre-school and church. Wivenhoe
Wivenhoe ( ) is a town and civil parish in north-eastern Essex, England, approximately south-east of Colchester. Historically Wivenhoe village, on the banks of the River Colne, and Wivenhoe Cross, on the higher ground to the north, were two separate settlements; however, with considerable development in the 19th century, the two have since merged. At the 2011 census, the town had a population of 7,637, compared with 7,221 in 2001. The town's history centres on fishing, ship building and smuggling. Jaywick
Jaywick is a coastal village in the Tendring district of Essex, England, west of Clacton-on-Sea. It lies on the North Sea coast of England, from London and from Colchester. It was constructed in the 1930s as a holiday resort for Londoners, but has, over time, been officially named the most deprived area in the country. The land on which the village is built was originally fields and salt marsh and unsuitable for agriculture. It was purchased by the entrepreneur Frank Stedman in 1928 to build low cost, affordable holiday homes for working-class families, and became a popular holiday destination throughout the 1930s. Elmstead Market
Elmstead Market is a village in the civil parish of Elmstead, in the Tendring district of Essex, England. It lies 3 km north-east of Wivenhoe and 6 km east of Colchester. It is on the A133 road which runs to Clacton-on-Sea to the south-east and Colchester to the west. In 2018 it had an estimated population of 1,684. Churches The Church of England parish church is dedicated to Saint Anne, the mother of the Virgin Mary and Saint Lawrence of Rome, a leader of the Early Church and a martyr. The main parts of the church have been dated to around 1310; a south chapel was added about 20 years later. The early 14th-century tower only rises one and a half storeys and was never completed. The village used to have a Wesleyan Methodist Chapel, built in 1817. It was demolished in 1999 for a newer chapel to be built in its place.
