Françoise D'Eaubonne
Françoise d'Eaubonne (12 March 1920 – 3 August 2005) was a French author, labour rights activist, environmentalist, and feminist. Her 1974 book, ''Le Féminisme ou la Mort'', introduced the term ecofeminism. She co-founded the Front homosexuel d'action révolutionnaire, a homosexual revolutionary alliance in Paris. Life and career Her mother was a teacher, a child of a Carlist revolutionary. Her father was an anarcho-syndicalist and the secretary general of an insurance company. Both of her parents were members of the religious Sillon movement. When she was at the age of 16, the Spanish Civil War broke out. Later, she would express her feelings in this period of her life with the title "''Chienne de Jeunesse''". A member of the French Communist Party from 1945-1957, in 1971, she co-founded the Front homosexuel d'action révolutionnaire (FHAR), a homosexual revolutionary movement. Carolyn Merchant (born July 12, 1936 in Rochester, New York) is an American ecofeminist philosopher and historian of science most famous for her theory (and book of the same title) on ''The Death of Nature'', whereby she identifies the Scientific Revolution of the seventeenth century as the period when science began to atomize, objectify, and dissect nature, foretelling its eventual conception as composed of inert atomic particles. Feminism in France is the history of feminist thought and movements in France. Feminism in France can be roughly divided into three waves: First-wave feminism from the French Revolution through the Third Republic which was concerned chiefly with suffrage and civic rights for women. Significant contributions came from revolutionary movements of the French Revolution of 1848 and Paris Commune, culminating in 1944 when women gained the right to vote. Second-wave feminism began in the 1940s as a reevaluation of women's role in society, reconciling the inferior treatment of women in society despite their ostensibly equal political status to men. Ecofeminists
Ecofeminism is a branch of feminism and political ecology. Ecofeminist thinkers draw on the concept of gender to analyse the relationships between humans and the natural world. ''Feminism or death'' (french: Le Féminisme ou la mort) is a book of essays about ecofeminism by Françoise d´Eaubonne. In it, d'Eaubonne first coined the term ''ecofeminism'' (''l'eco-féminisme''), which conceptualizes the apparent linkage between the treatment of women and the environment. The book was published in 1974 by P. Horay, and an English translation by Ruth A. Hottell was released by Verso Books in 2022. d´Eaubonne shows the commonality between the suppression of women and the suppression of nature. Background D'Eaubonne's activism began early, with her involvement in the anti-Nazi resistance and later the Women's Liberation Movement. Though she was not a scholar, she was educated through her activism.
