François Folie
François Folie (1833–1905) was a Belgian astronomer. He was the Administer at the University of Liège, director of the Institute of Astrophysics at the Cointe Observatory, and director of the Royal Observatory of Belgium. Early life Folie was born on 11 December 1833 in Venlo (then in Belgium). He was the oldest of seven children. In 1830 Belgium declared itself independent from The Netherlands and there was a treaty discussion going on to determine the status of the regions. The treaty placed Venlo back in The Netherlands so his father moved to Liège as he was in the military and a captain in the Belgian artillery. In Belgium, his father was put in charge to teach pyrotechnics and artillery advancements to the army. Folie went to college in Liège and on 13 August 1855 Folie earned a mathematics and physics doctorate. His father died young and Folie had to support his mother and 6 siblings. Adalbert Krüger
Karl Nikolaus Adalbert Krueger (9 December 1832 – 21 April 1896) was a German astronomer. Born in Marienburg, Prussia (now Malbork, Poland), he was editor of '' Astronomische Nachrichten ''from 1881 until his death. Krueger died of a heart condition in Kiel at the age of 63. Jean-Charles Houzeau
Jean-Charles Houzeau de Lehaie (October 7, 1820 – July 12, 1888) was a Belgian astronomer and journalist. A French speaker, he moved to New Orleans after getting in trouble for his politics in Belgium. In the U.S. he continued his journalistic, astronomical, and political pursuits. He was an abolitionist and joined with unionists in Texas before the American Civil War. In New Orleans he worked with Dr. Louis Charles Roudanez at the newspapers he founded in the 1860s. Houzeau migrated to Jamaica in the postwar years. After a period here, he received reinstatement from an observatory in Brussels and returned to Europe to work. Rudolf Clausius
Rudolf Julius Emanuel Clausius (; 2 January 1822 – 24 August 1888) was a German physicist and mathematician and is considered one of the central founding fathers of the science of thermodynamics. By his restatement of Sadi Carnot's principle known as the Carnot cycle, he gave the theory of heat a truer and sounder basis. Friedrich Wilhelm Argelander
Friedrich Wilhelm August Argelander (22 March 1799 – 17 February 1875) was a German astronomer. He is known for his determinations of stellar brightnesses, positions, and distances. Life and work Argelander was born in Memel in the Kingdom of Prussia (now Klaipėda in Lithuania), the son of a father of Finnish descent, Johann Gottlieb Argelander, and German (Prussian) mother, Dorothea Wilhelmina Grünlingen. He studied with Friedrich Bessel, whose assistant he became in 1820, and obtained his Ph.D. in 1822 at University of Königsberg.
