François-Xavier Garneau Medal
The ''François-Xavier Garneau Medal'' is a book prize awarded by the Canadian Historical Association. Awarded only every five years since it was first awarded in 1980, the CHA describes the Medal as its "most prestigious" prize, honouring "an outstanding Canadian contribution to historical research." The Medal is named for François-Xavier Garneau, a 19th-century Quebecois poet and civil servant who wrote a classic three-volume history of the French Canadian nation entitled ''Histoire du Canada.'' Canadian Historical Association
The Canadian Historical Association (CHA; French ''Société historique du Canada'', SHC) is a Canadian organization founded in 1922 for the purposes of promoting historical research and scholarship. It is a bilingual, not-for-profit, charitable organization, the largest of its kind in Canada. François-Xavier Garneau
François-Xavier Garneau (June 15, 1809 – February 2 or February 3, 1866) was a nineteenth-century French Canadian notary, poet, civil servant and liberal who wrote a three-volume history of the French Canadian nation entitled ''Histoire du Canada'' between 1845 and 1848. Biography Garneau was born in Quebec City and in 1821 he entered a school which had been opened in the basement of the chapel of the Congrégation des Hommes de la Haute Ville. Then Garneau educated at Quebec seminary, studied law, and was admitted as a notary in 1830. Subsequently, he became clerk of the legislative assembly, member of the council of public instruction, and city clerk of Quebec, which office he held from 1845 until his death on February 2 or February 3, 1866. Garneau was an honorary member of literary and historical societies in the United States and Canada, and for several years president of the Institut Canadien of Quebec. Michael Bliss
John William Michael Bliss (1941–2017) was a Canadian historian and author. Though his early works focused on business and political history, he subsequently authored several important medical biographies, including of Sir William Osler. Bliss was also a frequent commentator on political events and issues. He was an Officer of the Order of Canada. Early life Born on January 18, 1941, in Leamington, Ontario, Bliss was raised in nearby Kingsville, Ontario. His father, Quartus Bliss, was a Kingsville-based physician who encouraged Michael to enter the medical field. Joy Parr
Joy Parr (born 1949) is a Canadian historian. Parr is a professor at the University of Western Ontario and holds a Canada Research Chair, Tier 1 Canada Research Chair in Technology, Culture and Risk. She is known for her work in the fields of Labor history (discipline), labour and gender history as well as the history of technology. Career and honours Parr received her Bachelor of Arts degree from McGill University in 1971 before moving on to graduate school at Yale University, where she received her PhD in 1977. She has taught at several institutions in both Canada and the United States, including Yale, Queen's University at Kingston, Queen's University, the University of British Columbia, and Simon Fraser University. Gérard Bouchard
Gérard Bouchard (born 1943) is a Canadian historian and sociologist affiliated with the Université du Québec à Chicoutimi. Born on 26 December 1943 in Jonquière, Quebec, he obtained his master's degree in sociology from Université Laval in 1968 and later obtained his PhD in history from the University of Paris in 1971. Bouchard had authored, co-authored, edited, or co-edited 26 books, and published 230 papers in scientific journals as of 2005. Bouchard is the younger brother of Lucien Bouchard, Premier of Quebec from 1996 to 2001. Like his brother, he is a supporter of the Quebec sovereignty movement. Timothy James Brook (Chinese name: 卜正民; born January 6, 1951) is a Canadian historian, sinologist, and writer specializing in the study of China (sinology). Bettina Bradbury
Bettina Bradbury (born 1949) is a professor emerita in the Department of History and Gender Studies at York University and a fellow of the Royal Society of Canada. She is also the author of numerous history books. In 2012, she was awarded the Prix Lionel Groulx – Fondation Yves-Saint-Germain Prize and Clio-Québec Prize from the Canadian Historical Association (CHA) for her book ''Wife to Widow.
