Franzobel
Franzobel is the pseudonym of the Austrian writer (Franz) Stefan Griebl. He was born on 1 March 1967 in Vöcklabruck. In 1997 he won the Wolfgang Weyrauch Prize and in 1998, the Kassel Literary Prize, amongst numerous other literary awards. In 2017, he won the prestigious Nicolas Born Prize and was long-listed for the German Book Prize for his novel ''Das Floß der Medusa''. He now lives in Vienna. Books * ''Der Wimmerldrucker. Nicolas Born Prize
The Nicolas Born Prize, awarded by the German state of Lower Saxony, is a literary prize given since 2000 in honour of the writer Nicolas Born. It is awarded to notable German-language writers from Germany, Austria and Switzerland. The main prize is currently 20,000 Euros, and since 2015 a further 10,000 Euro prize has been awarded to a debut author. Vöcklabruck
Vöcklabruck () is the administrative center of the Vöcklabruck district, Austria. It is located in the western part of Upper Austria, close to the A1 Autobahn as well as the B1 highway. Vöcklabruck's name derives from the River Vöckla which runs through the town, whose name in turn originates from a person's name ('Vechela') and 'Ache', meaning 'flowing water' or 'river'. Vöcklabruck has many shops as well as services and schools. Kassel Literary Prize
The Kassel Literary Prize for Grotesque Humor (''Kasseler Literaturpreis für grotesken Humor''), established 1985, is an annual prize awarded by the city of Kassel and the Brückner-Kühner foundation in recognition of "grotesque and comic work" at a high artistic level. Prior to 1996, it was also given to literary professors whose work is connected to this theme. The prize includes an award of 10,000 euros. The foundation has, since 2004, also awarded authors under the age of 35 the ''Förderpreis Komische Literatur''. This prize includes an award of 3,000 euros. French Frigate Méduse (1810)
''Méduse'' was a 40-gun frigate of the French Navy, launched in 1810. She took part in the Napoleonic Wars during the late stages of the Mauritius campaign of 1809–1811 and in raids in the Caribbean. In 1816, following the Bourbon Restoration, ''Méduse'' was armed en flûte to ferry French officials to the port of Saint-Louis, in Senegal, to formally re-establish French occupation of the colony under the terms of the First Peace of Paris. Through inept navigation by her captain, Hugues Duroy de Chaumareys, who had been given command after the Bourbon Restoration for political reasons and even though he had hardly sailed in 20 years, ''Méduse'' struck the Bank of Arguin off the coast of present-day Mauritania and became a total loss. Most of the 400 passengers on board evacuated, with 146 men and 1 woman forced to take refuge on an improvised raft towed by the frigate's launches.
