Franklinton Depot
Franklinton Depot, also known as the Raleigh and Gaston Railroad Passenger Depot and Franklinton Woman's Club Clubhouse, is a historic train station located at 201 East Mason Street in Franklinton, Franklin County, North Carolina. It was built by the Raleigh and Gaston Railroad in 1886, and is a one-story, rectangular frame building with Italianate, Queen Anne, and Gothic Revival style design elements. The main section measures 51 feet by 16 feet, with an attached 10 feet by 12 feet baggage room. The main section has a steeply pitched gable roof and baggage room a low-pitched hip roof. Franklinton, North Carolina
Franklinton is a town in Franklin County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 2,456 at the 2020 census. History Franklinton, was established as Franklin Depot in 1839 on land owned by Shemuel Kearney (1791–1860), son of Crawford Kearney and Nancy White. A home constructed by grandfather Shemuel Kearney (1734–1808) was originally located south of town and is currently the second oldest residence in Franklin County, built in 1759. The building was purchased in 2009 and moved to nearby Louisburg for restoration. Franklin Depot changed its name to Franklinton in 1842 when the town was incorporated. Like Franklin County, Franklinton was named for Benjamin Franklin. According to many locals, Trinity College, originally located in Trinity, was initially planned and approved to be moved to Franklinton in 1889. The Italianate style was a distinct 19th-century phase in the history of Classical architecture. Hamlet Station
Hamlet station is an Amtrak train station in Hamlet, North Carolina, United States. The station is located within the Main Street Commercial Historic District and is in walking distance to the National Railroad Museum and Hall of Fame. History Hamlet Station was originally built in 1900 by the Seaboard Air Line Railroad as both a passenger station and a division headquarters. It was originally called the Seaboard Air Line Passenger Depot. Seaboard Air Line
The Seaboard Air Line Railroad , which styled itself "The Route of Courteous Service," was an American railroad which existed from April 14, 1900, until July 1, 1967, when it merged with the Atlantic Coast Line Railroad, its longtime rival, to form the Seaboard Coast Line Railroad. Predecessor railroads dated from the 1830s and reorganized extensively to rebuild after the American Civil War. The company was headquartered in Norfolk, Virginia, until 1958, when its main offices were relocated to Richmond, Virginia. The Seaboard Air Line Railway Building in Norfolk's historic Freemason District still stands and has been converted into apartments.
