Jazz
Jazz is a music genre that originated in the African-American communities of New Orleans, Louisiana in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, with its roots in blues and ragtime. Since the 1920s Jazz Age, it has been recognized as a major form of musical expression in traditional and popular music. Jazz is characterized by swing and blue notes, complex chords, call and response vocals, polyrhythms and improvisation. Jazz has roots in European harmony and African rhythmic rituals. As jazz spread around the world, it drew on national, regional, and local musical cultures, which gave rise to different styles. New Orleans jazz began in the early 1910s, combining earlier brass band marches, French quadrilles, biguine, ragtime and blues with collective polyphonic improvisation. But jazz did not begin as a single musical tradition in New Orleans or elsewhere. In the 1930s, arranged dance-oriented swing big bands, Kansas City jazz (a hard-swinging, bluesy, improvisationa ...

Miles & Monk At Newport
''Miles & Monk at Newport'' is a split album featuring separate performances by the Miles Davis sextet and the Thelonious Monk quartet at the Newport Jazz Festival, recorded in 1958 and 1963, respectively, and released in June 1964 by Columbia records. Despite the album's title, the two artists do not perform together at either date. On the first side of the LP was a series of high tempo performances of bebop tunes and other staples of the Davis live repertoire from 1958. The performance was contemporaneous with Davis' ''Milestones'' album. Aside from the 1973 release '' Jazz at the Plaza'' (also a 1958 concert) during the LP era, this was the only legitimate (non-bootleg) recording of a live Davis combo performance earlier than the 1960 Blackhawk recordings. As such, this performance and ''Jazz at the Plaza'' were the only legitimate live recordings representing the ''Kind of Blue'' sextet. On the second side were a few numbers by Thelonious Monk's combo, from a 1963 Newpo ...

Criss Cross (album)
''Criss-Cross'' is an album by Thelonious Monk that was released by Columbia; his second for that label. The album consists of previously released Monk compositions that were re-recorded for Columbia by the Thelonious Monk Quartet. History ''Criss-Cross'' was recorded during and shortly after the sessions for Monk's first Columbia LP, '' Monk's Dream''. The quartet of musicians that appear on the album had been playing together for four years at the time of the recording sessions, and was thus one of the longer-lived bands of Monk's career. Allmusic's Lindsay Planer called the album "some of the finest work that Monk ever did in the studio with his '60s trio and quartet." The critical and popular success of the group during this period led to Monk's appearance on the cover of ''Time'' magazine in February 1964. It later became known that as Monk's international profile was reaching its apex in the mid-1960s, his manic depressive episodes were getting more severe and his composi ...
