Frankie Connolly
Francis Connolly (1945 – 20 November 2023) was an Irish footballer whose teams included Ringmahon Rangers, Cork Hibernians and Cork Alberts. Career Connolly spent his early boyhood playing days with Ringmahon Rangers. He was capped against England and Wales in Schoolboys International, before spending a month on trial with West Bromwich Albion. Connolly signed for Cork Hibernians in 1962 and made his debut against Bohemians as a 17-year-old. He was also chosen for home and away Youth Internationals against Northern Ireland. After two seasons in the League of Ireland, Connolly returned to Ringmahon Rangers in 1964 and won to back-to-back Munster Senior League titles in 1964 and 1965. He returned to Cork Hibs in 1966 and scored a hat-trick against Cork Celtic in his second game back. Connolly won his first major trophy in 1970 when Hibs won the League of Ireland Shield. Cork (city)
Cork ( , from , meaning 'marsh') is the second largest city in Ireland and third largest city by population on the island of Ireland. It is located in the south-west of Ireland, in the province of Munster. Following an extension to the city's boundary in 2019, its population is over 222,000. The 1971–72 Blaxnit Cup was the 5th edition of the Blaxnit Cup, an association football cup competition featuring teams from Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland. Blaxnit Cup
The Blaxnit Cup, is a defunct club football competition which featured teams from both football associations on the island of Ireland, in a similar format to the later Setanta Cup. It was inaugurated in 1967 as a cross-border competition between clubs from the League of Ireland from the Republic of Ireland and the Irish League from Northern Ireland and ran until 1974. The competition was sponsored by Blaxnit, a sock and hosiery manufacturer based in Newtownards. The competition featured four teams from each league. The Blaxnit Cup was the third cross-border competition. Previous competitions included the Dublin and Belfast Intercity Cup 1941/42-1948/49 and the North-South Cup 1961/62-1962/63. Albert Rovers F.C. were an Irish association football club based in Cork. Between 1976–77 and 1981–82 the club played in the League of Ireland. During this time the club also played under the names Cork Albert, Cork Alberts and Cork United. The club has also fielded teams in the Munster Senior League and the Cork Athletic Union League.
