Frank Roberts (model Maker)
Frank Roberts (1882–26 June 1963) was a New Zealand pioneer in building model railways. His models were extremely accurate and reflected the history of the New Zealand railways. Early career Roberts spent his early career working for New Zealand Railways Department (NZR) as a cleaner, fireman and driver before becoming a partner in an electrical firm with his brother Jack. In 1903 Roberts built his first model which was of the WA class steam locomotive using a scale of 1:19. In 1926 Roberts joined the Auckland Model Engineering Society and began building his first garden railway. Using 1¾ inch gauge track, Roberts, his brother George and W. W. Stewart built a large railway (known as the "RSR Railway") over the next 50 years at Roberts home in Epsom, Auckland. Roberts built his models from then on to a scale of 1:24 (G scale). New Zealand Railways Department
The New Zealand Railways Department, NZR or NZGR (New Zealand Government Railways) and often known as the "Railways", was a government department charged with owning and maintaining New Zealand's railway infrastructure and operating the railway system. The Department was created in 1880 and was corporatised on 1 April 1982 into the New Zealand Railways Corporation. Originally, railway construction and operation took place under the auspices of the former provincial governments and some private railways, before all of the provincial operations came under the central Public Works Department. The role of operating the rail network was subsequently separated from that of the network's construction. From 1895 to 1993 there was a responsible Minister, the Minister of Railways. New Zealand Model Railway Guild
The New Zealand Model Railway Guild is an Incorporated society in New Zealand that exists to provide "...a link between model railway enthusiasts with a focus on modelling the New Zealand prototype." History The Guild began as the model railway section of the New Zealand Railway and Locomotive Society in 1947. Originally known as the New Zealand Model Railway Association, it was renamed as the guild and incorporated as a separate incorporated society on 28 July 1967. Publications The Guild publishes the ''New Zealand Model Railway Journal'' () four times a year. The entire archive of the journal is now online. Special Interest Groups Several special interest groups exist within the guild, usually specific to model railway scales, such as the NZ120 group, and the 9mm scale group. NZR WA Class
The NZR WA class locomotives were a class of Tank locomotive built by New Zealand Railways Department, New Zealand Railways (NZR). Eleven were built at NZR's own Addington Workshops in Christchurch and Hillside Workshops in Dunedin. Four more were converted from old NZR J class (1874), J class 2-6-0 locomotives. Three were fitted with brakes to assist descent on the Fell mountain railway system, Fell-operated Rewanui Branch, Rewanui and Blackball Branch, Roa inclines on the South Island's West Coast Region. These were among the last in use. Preservation Only one WA class has been preserved, number 165. The locomotive was restored by Gisborne City Vintage Railway in 2000. Garden Railway
A garden railroad or garden railway is a model railway system set up outdoors in a garden. While G is the most popular scale for garden railroads, 16 mm scale has a dedicated and growing following especially in the UK. Model locomotives in this scale are often live steam scale models of British narrow gauge prototypes. 16 mm scale (which runs on ) track, the same gauge as O gauge is probably now more popular in the UK than G scale. A garden railway's scale tends to be in the range of 1/32 (Gauge 1) to 1/12 (1:12), running on either or gauge track. 1/32 scale (1:32) is also called "three-eighths scale" meaning 3/8 of an inch on the model represents one foot on the real thing. G Scale
Large scale or G scale (, G gauge) is a track gauge for model railways which is often used for outdoor garden railways because of its size and durability. G scale trains use a fixed track gauge of to accommodate a range of rail transport modelling scales between narrow gauge ( ~1:13‒ 1:19‒ 1:20), metre gauge ( 1:22.5), Playmobil trains ( ~1:24), and standard gauge (~1:29– 1:32). G-scale LGB (, "Lehmann's Big Train") was introduced in 1968 by Ernst Paul Lehmann Patentwerk in Germany. LGB products were intended for indoor and outdoor use; so the "G" became interpreted as "garden scale". Most track is made of brass which can remain outside in all weather. Track can also be obtained in less expensive aluminium as well as oxidation-resistant, though more expensive, stainless steel. New Zealand Centennial Exhibition
The New Zealand Centennial Exhibition took place over six months from Wednesday 8 November 1939 until 4 May 1940. It celebrated one hundred years since the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi in 1840 and the subsequent mass European settlement of New Zealand. 2,641,043 (2.6 million) visitors attended the exhibition. The New Zealand Government staged the exhibition with assistance from local government, New Zealand industry and the New Zealand public. The exhibition received support from the United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, Fiji and other Pacific islands who either constructed their own pavilions on site or had displays in one of the exhibition buildings. Tranz Rail, formally Tranz Rail Holdings Limited (New Zealand Rail Limited until 1995), was the main Rail transport in New Zealand, rail operator in New Zealand from 1991 until it was purchased by Toll Holdings in 2003.
