Frank Miller (singer)
Frank Miller (July 29, 1918 – December 15, 2015) was an American singer and songwriter. He was born in Brooklyn, New York. He is best known for being part of a band called " The Easy Riders", with Richard Dehr and Miller: they accompanied Terry Gilkyson on the best-selling recording of their hit song "Marianne" as a single in 1956. Subsequently, Miller, Jerry Yester, and Doug Myres formed another "Easy Riders" group. His wife Juanita died in 2005 at the age of 81. The Easy Riders (American Band)
The Easy Riders were an American folk music band, that operated from 1956 to 1959, consisting of Terry Gilkyson, Richard Dehr, and Frank Miller (singer), Frank Miller. Their career was guided by Mitch Miller, who had them under contract for Columbia Records. Their greatest hit, in early 1957, was the song "Marianne (1956 song), Marianne". The group also composed some tunes for the 1958 cinemiracle-documentary ''Windjammer (1958 film), Windjammer'', such as "Kari Waits for Me" and "Sugar Cane". One of Gilkyson's songs was a number one hit for Frankie Laine, "The Cry of the Wild Goose". Gilkyson wrote many tunes for Laine, and he and The Easy Riders were also featured on Frankie's 1957 hit, "Love Is a Golden Ring", having also penned the number for Laine. Terry Gilkyson
Terry Gilkyson (June 17, 1916 — October 15, 1999) was an American folk singer and songwriter. Biography Gilkyson was born in Phoenixville, Pennsylvania, and graduated from St. George's School in Middletown, Rhode Island in 1935. By his early twenties, he had become a worker on a ranch in Tucson, Arizona, then joined the United States Army Air Forces during World War II. In 1947, he married Jane Haughton and moved to California to pursue a career as a folk singer. He wrote and recorded "The Cry of the Wild Goose", which became a hit song for Frankie Laine in 1950, as well as the 1953 hit song " Tell Me a Story" recorded by Jimmy Boyd and Laine. In 1951 Gilkyson appeared in, as well as wrote continuing songs for, the Cinecolor Western film ''Slaughter Trail'' that, in the manner of '' High Noon'', had ballads throughout the film relating to the plot. "Marianne" is a traditional calypso song made popular by Trinidadian calypsonian Roaring Lion. History "Mary Ann" is a traditional calypso that was recorded by Trinidadian calypsonian Roaring Lion (born Rafael de Leon). It was popular with steel bands and revelers during a spontaneous carnival celebration on V-J Day in Trinidad in 1945, at the end of World War II. The song's lyrics allude to Mary Ann's occupation: :All day, all night, Miss Mary Ann :Down by the seaside, she sifting sand. Jerome Alan Yester (born January 9, 1943) is an American folk rock musician, record producer, and arranger. Biography Yester was born in Birmingham, Alabama, United States, and grew up in Burbank, California. He formed a duo with brother Jim Yester, the Yester Brothers, and starting playing folk clubs in Los Angeles in 1960. When Jim enlisted in the army, Jerry joined The New Christy Minstrels, and then, in 1963, the Modern Folk Quartet. The MFQ released two albums in the next two years, and Yester also branched out into other recordings, playing piano on The Lovin' Spoonful's " Do You Believe in Magic" in 1965. The MFQ split up in 1966, and Yester began work as a solo artist and as a producer, with his wife Judy Henske, his brother Jim's band the Association, The Turtles, and Tim Buckley, for whom he produced '' Goodbye and Hello'' and '' Happy Sad''.
