Frank Mebane
Benjamin Franklin Mebane Jr. (February 4, 1865 – June 15, 1926) was an American industrialist. Early life Benjamin Franklin Mebane Jr. was born on February 4, 1865 in Mebansville, North Carolina to Benjamin Franklin Mebane and Frances Lavinia Kerr Mebane. He was descended from Alexander Mebane, a Continental Army officer and U.S. Congressman for whom the town was named. He was educated at the Bingham School. On February 8, 1893 Mebane married Lily Morehead, the granddaughter of industrialist and former governor of North Carolina John Motley Morehead. Career Industry and business When he was 17 years of age, Mebane left school and worked as a salesman in Danville, Virginia and New York City. Following his marriage, he moved to Spray, North Carolina. Mebane, North Carolina
Mebane is a city located mostly in Alamance County, North Carolina, United States, and partly in Orange County. The town was named for Alexander Mebane, an American Revolutionary War general and member of the U.S. Congress. It was incorporated as "Mebanesville" in 1881, and in 1883 the name was changed to "Mebane". It was incorporated as a city in 1987. The population as of the 2020 census was 17,768. Mebane is one of the fastest-growing municipalities in North Carolina. Mebane straddles the Research Triangle and Piedmont Triad Regions of North Carolina. The bulk of the city is in Alamance County, which comprises the Burlington Metropolitan Statistical Area, itself a component of the Greensboro-Winston-Salem- High Point Combined Statistical Area. Dan River
The Dan River flows in the U.S. states of North Carolina and Virginia. It rises in Patrick County, Virginia, and crosses the state border into Stokes County, North Carolina. It then flows into Rockingham County. From there it flows back into Virginia through Pittsylvania County before reentering North Carolina near the border between Caswell County and Rockingham County. It flows into northern Caswell County and then back into southern Virginia (briefly Pittsylvania County, then into Halifax County) and finally into Kerr Reservoir on the Roanoke River. The name of the river was first recorded by William Byrd II in 1728, during an expedition to survey the Virginia border, though Byrd did not explain the reason for the name. Luten Bridge Company and variations such as Luten Engineering Company was the name of a number of different bridge building companies in the United States during the early- to mid-20th century. Each had rights to build concrete Luten arch bridges, according to the patented designs of Daniel B. Luten, of Indianapolis. One that distributed a brochure in 1921 and that was prolific in Tennessee had offices in York, Pennsylvania, in Clarksburg, West Virginia, in Huntington, West Virginia, in Atlanta, Georgia, and in Palatka, Florida. It built the seven span Harriman Bridge in Tennessee. The Luten Bridge Company is documented to have built 71 bridges in Tennessee. Rockingham County Courthouse (North Carolina)
The Rockingham County Courthouse is a historic courthouse located at Wentworth, North Carolina, Wentworth, Rockingham County, North Carolina. It was designed by Frank P. Milburn and built in 1907. It is a Neoclassical architecture, Classical Revival style red brick building that consists of a three-story hipped roofed main block flanked by later added (at two separate times) two-story flat roofed wings. It features a low and broad polygonal cupola atop the Spanish red tile roof. Cronyism
Cronyism is the spoils system practice of partiality in awarding jobs and other advantages to friends or trusted colleagues, especially in politics and between politicians and supportive organizations. In finance, a bond is a type of security under which the issuer ( debtor) owes the holder ( creditor) a debt, and is obliged – depending on the terms – to repay the principal (i.e. amount borrowed) of the bond at the maturity date as well as interest (called the coupon) over a specified amount of time. The interest is usually payable at fixed intervals: semiannual, annual, and less often at other periods. Thus, a bond is a form of loan or IOU. Bonds provide the borrower with external funds to finance long-term investments or, in the case of government bonds, to finance current expenditure. North Carolina Highway 87 (NC 87) is a primary state highway in the U.S. state of North Carolina. NC 87 begins in the Atlantic coastal town of Southport and crosses into Virginia at the Virginia state line five miles (8 km) north of Eden in Rockingham County. 1904 Republican National Convention
The 1904 Republican National Convention was held in the Chicago Coliseum, Chicago, Cook County, Illinois, on June 21 to June 23, 1904. The popular President Theodore Roosevelt had easily ensured himself of the nomination; a threat had come from the Old Guard favourite Ohio Senator Mark Hanna, the loyal kingmaker in Republican politics, but he died early in 1904, which ended any opposition to Roosevelt within the Republican Party.
