Frank Willis Mayborn (December 7, 1903May 16, 1987) was an American philanthropist, soldier, newspapers editor, publisher and broadcaster. He is best known for the crucial role he played in Bell County and Temple city's development in Austin, Texas. Early life Mayborn was born in Akron, Ohio, to his father Ward Carlton Mayborn, a media personnel who was also a newspaper publisher of E.W. Scripps newspaper conglomerate, and his mother Nellie Childs Welton. In 1910, his parents relocated to Denver, Colorado, and later moved again in 1919 to Dallas, Texas. Newspaper and publishing career Mayborn started working with newspapers when he was in high school as a stringer at Denver Post, part-time and summer worker at San Diego Sun and Dallas Dispatch, and as a correspondent in United Press before becoming a publisher. The ''Killeen Daily Herald'' is a daily newspaper in Killeen, Texas. The newspaper is owned by Frank Mayborn Enterprises, Inc. The newspaper has a daily circulation of about 14,000 readers and a Sunday circulation of about 17,000 readers. History The newspaper was established in June 1890 as the weekly ''Killeen Herald'', owned by W.E. Bennett. Bennett sold the newspaper in 1893, and ownership of the newspaper changed several times before Bennett repurchased it in 1903. After a failed transition to a daily, William H. Carter bought it that year and reverted it to a weekly format. Shortly thereafter, Bennett also formed semi-weekly newspaper called the ''Killeen Messenger''. The Temple Daily Telegram is the daily newspaper of Temple, Texas, serving Central Texas since 1907. The Telegram is locally owned and operated by Frank Mayborn Enterprises, under editor and publisher Sue Mayborn, the widow of Frank Mayborn. On Sunday, November 18, 2007, the newspaper unveiled a Texas Historical Commission marker to commemorate the centennial of the publication.
