Frank Guthrie (politician)
Frank Guthrie (7 June 1893 – 21 September 1955) was an Australian politician who was a Labor Party member of the Legislative Assembly of Western Australia from 1950 until his death, representing the seat of Bunbury. Williams was born in Perth, to Eliza Ann (née Harvey) and David Guthrie. He enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force in 1915, and during the war served as a private in the 16th and 48th Battalions. He was wounded in action in France in 1917, losing a leg. After the war's end, Guthrie worked as a tally clerk on the Bunbury wharf. Western Australian Legislative Assembly
The Western Australian Legislative Assembly, or lower house, is one of the two chambers of the Parliament of Western Australia, an Australian state. The Parliament sits in Parliament House in the Western Australian capital, Perth. The Legislative Assembly today has 59 members, elected for four-year terms from single-member electoral districts. Members are elected using the preferential voting system. As with all other Australian states and territories, voting is compulsory for all Australian citizens over the legal voting age of 18. Role and operation Most legislation in Western Australia is initiated in the Legislative Assembly. The party or coalition that can command a majority in the Legislative Assembly is invited by the Governor to form a government. 1953 Western Australian State Election
Elections were held in the state of Western Australia on 14 February 1953 to elect all 50 members to the Legislative Assembly. The two-term Liberal- Country Party coalition government, led by Premier Sir Ross McLarty, was defeated by the Labor Party, led by Opposition Leader Albert Hawke. The election was notable in that 22 of the 50 seats were not contested at the election. Only two other elections—those held in 1890 and 1894—had a greater percentage or number of uncontested seats.
