Frank Howel Evans
Francis (Frank) Howel Evans (1867–1931) was a Welsh author who wrote for many British story papers such as '' Chums'', ''The Boy's Own Paper'', and ''The Boys' Friend'' during the first few decades of the 20th century. He also wrote under the pen names Atherley Daunt and Crutchley Payne. Many of his stories take place in the theatre. Evans is probably best remembered for his "Old Pawray" stories featuring the retired French detective Monsieur Jules Poiret, likely an inspiration for Agatha Christie's Hercule Poirot. He also wrote six Sexton Blake stories for '' The Union Jack'' and ''The Penny Popular''. Frank Evans (1 October 1930 – 6 February 2007) was an English jazz guitarist Career Evans started playing guitar at the age of eleven. His first recording was with Tubby Hayes and Tony Coe on ''Jazz Tête à Tête'' in 1966. After years of touring, Evans focused on his career as a solo jazz guitarist and operated from his home town of Bristol. In the late 1970s, he started Blue Bag Records, releasing his albums ''Noctuary'', ''Soiree'', and ''...For Little Girls''. Frank Evans (December 1, 1921 – August 3, 2012) was a professional baseball player in the Negro leagues. He played for multiple Negro league teams in his career, which began in 1937. He played for the Memphis Red Sox, Kansas City Monarchs, Detroit Stars, Cleveland Buckeyes, Birmingham Black Barons and Philadelphia Stars. He manned multiple positions, including catcher, first base, outfield and occasionally pitcher. Francis "Frank" Evans (born 18 August 1942) is a British-born matador, the most senior form of bullfighter, known as "El Inglés" (The Englishman.) He is reputed to be the only British bullfighter currently working professionally. He now holds Spanish citizenship. Early career The son of a butcher, Evans had started out with ambitions to be a rugby league professional. He was first interested in bullfighting on hearing his father's stories of watching fights when going into Spain from Gibraltar during World War II. In 1963, aged 19, on his first trip abroad (to attend a wedding in Spain) he witnessed his first bullfight at the Corpus Christi festival in Granada. Frank Edgar Evans (19 November 1876 – 25 November 1941) served as an infantryman in the Spanish–American War, and was commissioned in the United States Marine Corps on 15 February 1900. Biography He was born in Franklin, Pennsylvania on 19 November 1876. He served in the Philippines and in the United States prior to World War I, during which he won the Navy Cross and the Silver Star for his service in the Marine Brigade of the American Expeditionary Force in France. His postwar service included duty in Haiti, where from 1927 to 1930 he commanded the Constabulary Detachment and was Chief of the ''Gendarmerle d'Haiti''. The office of mayor of Birmingham, Alabama, was established with the incorporation of the city in 1871. Robert Henley was appointed by Governor Robert B. Lindsay to a two-year term. Until 1910, the Mayor presided over an ever-expanding Board of Aldermen who generally campaigned on the same ticket. Progressive reformers lobbied for a change in the form of government that year, resulting in the creation of a five-member Board of Commissioners (later reduced to three members). The President of the Commission, though not formally holding the title, was widely acknowledged as "Mayor" under that system. Thomas David Frank Evans (1917–1996) was a British soldier during World War II, during which he was also a prisoner of war of the Japanese Army. He published his memoirs in Welsh and English in the 1980s. Biography Frank Evans was born in 1917 in Llanwnnen, Lampeter in Wales. He was dispatched to the Crown Colony of Hong Kong as a member of the British Army ( Royal Army Pay Corps) in 1941. As a result of the Battle of Hong Kong in December 1941, he was captured by the Japanese Army and interned at the Sham Shui Po and Argyle Street POW camps in Hong Kong and later transferred to the Oeyama POW Camp, Iwataki Town, Yoza-gun, Kyoto Prefecture where he was forced to work in the open-pit nickel mine in Kaya and the smelting factory in Iwataki together with nearly 700 POW's from countries such as the UK, Canada, Australia and the USA. Frank Edward Evans (September 6, 1923 – June 3, 2010) was an American lawyer, politician, and World War II veteran who served seven terms as a U.S. Representative from Colorado from 1965 to 1979. Early life and education Born in Pueblo, Colorado, Evans attended public schools in Colorado Springs. He entered Pomona College in Claremont, California, in 1941. During World War II, he interrupted his education in 1943 to serve in the United States Navy as a patrol pilot from 1943 to 1946.
