Frank Edwards (communist)
Frank Edwards (1907–7 June 1983) was a teacher and prominent Ireland, Irish communism, communist. Edwards's parents were Belfast Catholics who relocated to Waterford. His father served, and died, in the British Army during the First World War. His elder brother, Jack Edwards, was the Waterford organiser of the one-day general strike against the enforcement of conscription in Ireland. Jack was active in the Irish War of Independence and then joined the Anti-treaty side in the Irish Civil War. In Kilkenny Gaol, he was shot "trying to escape" as a reprisal for a Free State officer killed in Waterford. Frank Edwards said of the killing of his brother "It was known to be a reprisal for the shooting of a Irish Free State, Free State officer, Captain O'Brien, in Waterford." He trained as a national school teacher in De La Salle College, Waterford. John Swift (trade Unionist)
John Swift (1896–1990) was an Irish trade union leader and secularist. Born in Dundalk, Swift was educated at a Christian Brothers School. His father ran a co-operative bakery but this closed and the family endured poverty. In 1914, Swift began an apprenticeship at a bakery in Dublin, and spent much of his spare time attending meetings where Jim Larkin was speaking. South Circular Road, Dublin
The South Circular Road (), designated as the R811 regional road, is a road in Dublin, Ireland. One of the longest in the city, it runs from Islandbridge in the west, through Rialto and Dolphin's Barn to Portobello, near the centre. It runs mainly through residential areas and is used by numerous bus routes. It is the southside equivalent of the North Circular Road. History The street was started in 1763, however until the early 19th century most of the area covered by the road was countryside. The site of Griffith Barracks was originally known as Grimswoods Nurseries. The first buildings on the site were those of a Remand Prison or Bridewell begun in 1813 by the architect Francis Johnston.
