Frank Childs
Frank Childs (born July 17, 1867, Texas; died June 20, 1936, Waukegan, Illinois), "The Crafty Texan", was an African American boxer who fought professionally out of Chicago from 1892 to 1911 and twice held the World Colored Heavyweight Championship. Fighting at a weight of between 160 and 185 lbs., the short, stocky Childs fought middleweights, light-heavyweights and heavyweights. He had a powerful punch. Journeyman He made his pro boxing debut on February 18, 1892 in Los Angeles against French Canadian George LaBlanche from Quebec, knocking him out in the third round. They fought again on March 24, with four-ounce gloves. In the eighth round, LaBlanche grabbed Childs by the waist, threw him to the canvas, and then kicked him. The badly hurt Childs got up and wrestled LaBlanche, putting him in a half-nelson before elevating LaBlanche and throwing him. Hank Griffin (boxer)
Hank Griffin (ca. 1870 – 2 May 1911) was an African American boxer who fought some of the greatest fighters in history, including World Colored Middleweight Champion Harris "The Black Pearl" Martin, World Colored Heavyweight Champion Frank Childs and World Heavyweight Champions Jack Johnson and James J. Jeffries. In 1896, in a very early match in James J. Jeffries career, Griffin was lost via a KO. In 1901, Griffin fought Jeffries again which resulted in a no-decision. Dan Creedon
Dan Creedon (9 June 1868 – 10 July 1942) was a middleweight boxer who challenged for the world middleweight title twice and claimed the title between 1895 and 1897. Creedon was born in Invercargill, New Zealand but his boxing career developed in Melbourne, Australia. Like many of Australia's best boxers of this era, Creedon was taught by boxing pioneers Jem Mace and Larry Foley. He held the Australian middleweight title from 1891 until his departure for America in 1892. He challenged Bob Fitzsimmons for the world middleweight title in 1894, in what would be Fitzsimmons' last defense of his belt before becoming a heavyweight. Creedon was knocked out in just 2 rounds. However, a year later he claimed the world title following his victory over Frank Craig in London. Creedon defended his claim to the title at least twice, but he is not commonly recognized as a middleweight champion by boxing historians. Joe Butler (boxer)
Joe Butler (18 May 1866 - 1 January 1941) was an African American boxer who was the colored middleweight champion of the world in the Gay Nineties. Born in Paoli, Pennsylvania, the 6′ 0½″ Butler fought out of Philadelphia during his career. Known as "The King of the Middleweights", Butler had quick hands and fast footwork and was known as canny fighter who could box or slug it out with an opponent. Colored Championship Butler fought colored middleweight champ Ed Binney on November 13, 1892 in Philadelphia and prevailed. Binney had won the title from Harris Martin, "The Black Pearl", the self-declared world colored middleweight champion. Binney had also defeated the former "Negro Middleweight" title holder Johnny Banks, "The Darkey Wizard", in a non-title fight in 1888. Butler lost his title in his only defense, when he was defeated by Frank Craig on 20 February 1894 in Philadelphia.
