Frank Byrne (Australian Politician)
Francis Arthur "Old Frank" Byrne (1837 – 30 June 1923) was Member of the New South Wales Legislative Assembly for the electoral district of Hay 1898–1903. Early life He was born in Singleton, New South Wales to Peter Byrne, a miner, and Sarah , and had a very limited education. He married Elizabeth Susan Grace in 1865 and subsequently Sarah Ann Tate ( – 1 May 1908). He had three sons and three daughters. Career He was engaged in the coach business with Cobb and Co., for some time at Castlemaine before settling in the Riverina district around 1870, working mostly at Balranald, Wilcannia and Hay. He was interested in current affairs, read newspapers voraciously, and with his genial manner, excellent memory and huge fund of anecdotes was popular with a broad range of the travelling public. New South Wales Legislative Assembly
The New South Wales Legislative Assembly is the lower of the two houses of the Parliament of New South Wales, an Australian state. The upper house is the New South Wales Legislative Council. Both the Assembly and Council sit at Parliament House in the state capital, Sydney. The Assembly is presided over by the Speaker of the Legislative Assembly. The Assembly has 93 members, elected by single-member constituency, which are commonly known as seats. Voting is by the optional preferential system. Members of the Legislative Assembly have the post-nominals MP after their names. The Federation of Australia was the process by which the six separate British self-governing colonies of Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria, Tasmania, South Australia (which also governed what is now the Northern Territory), and Western Australia agreed to unite and form the Commonwealth of Australia, establishing a system of federalism in Australia. James Ashton (Australian Politician)
James Ashton (8 May 1864 – 6 August 1939) was an Australian politician. Born at Ashby near Geelong to coffee-roaster James Ashton and Mary Ann Kinsman Brittan, he attended Sandhurst Grammar School until he left at the age of ten to work in a printing office. He moved to Echuca at the age of thirteen and then to Hay. He spent the next period working as a station agent and then as a journalist and part-owner of the '' Riverine Grazier''. Although about his partner, John Johnston, this reference has much on Ashton. He sold his interest in 1892 and bought the ''Narrandera Argus''. On 6 March 1899 he married Helen Willis, with whom he had four sons. A Free Trader, he was elected to the New South Wales Legislative Assembly as the member for Hay in 1894 and re-elected in 1895. The 1901 New South Wales state election was for 125 electoral districts, with each district returning one member. The election was conducted on the basis of a simple majority or first-past-the-post voting system. In this election, in 32 electorates the winning candidate received less than 50% of the votes, while 13 were uncontested. The average number of enrolled voters per electorate was 2,764, ranging from Wentworth (1,706) to Willoughby (4,854). Of the 125 members of the house prior to the election, 18 had been elected to the new federal parliament, while 7 did not contest the election, and a further 17 were defeated at the election. 81 members (65%) retained a seat after the election. Free Trade Party
The Free Trade Party which was officially known as the Australian Free Trade and Liberal Association, also referred to as the Revenue Tariff Party in some states, was an Australian political party, formally organised in 1887 in New South Wales, in time for the 1887 colony election, which the party won. It advocated the abolition of protectionism, especially protective tariffs and other restrictions on trade, arguing that this would create greater prosperity for all. However, many members also advocated use of minimal tariffs for government revenue purposes only. Its most prominent leader was George Reid, who led the Reid Government as the fourth Prime Minister of Australia (1904–05). ''The Riverine Grazier'' is an English language newspaper published in Hay, New South Wales from 1873. The paper absorbed the ''Riverina Times, Hay Standard and Journal of Water Conservation'' in October 1902. History The first issue of ''The Riverine Grazier'' was on 29 October 1873. The paper was published every Wednesday and could be subscribed to for £1 per year. It contained agricultural information, news and advertisements for goods and services in the area. Its founder was John Andrew; it was purchased in 1888 by James Ashton M.L.C. (previously a compositor with the ''Hay Standard'' then a clerk with Cramsie, Bowden and Co.) and John Johnston O.B.E.
