Frank (Squeeze Album)
''Frank'' is a studio album by new wave group Squeeze, released in 1989. The album sold poorly, and Squeeze was dropped by A&M Records while on tour. Forced to take offers from different major labels for the first time in their career, the band soon signed with Reprise Records and began working on their next studio album, '' Play''. ''Frank'' peaked at number 58 in the UK Albums Chart. It peaked at No. 113 on the ''Billboard'' 200. Production ''Frank'' was recorded live in the studio with producer Eric "E.T." Thorngren. Squeeze are an English rock band that came to prominence in the United Kingdom during the new wave period of the late 1970s, and continued recording in the 1980s, 1990s and 2010s. In the UK, their singles " Cool for Cats", " Up the Junction", and " Labelled with Love" were top-ten chart hits; "Pulling Mussels" only made it to 44 in the UK charts. Though not as commercially successful in the United States, Squeeze had American hits with " Tempted", "Black Coffee in Bed", and " Hourglass", and were considered a part of the Second British Invasion. The vast majority of their material is composed of lyrics by Chris Difford and music by Glenn Tilbrook, who are guitarists and vocalists in the band. The duo were hailed as "the heirs to Lennon and McCartney's throne" during the band's initial popularity in the late 1970s. The group formed in Deptford, London, in 1974, and first broke up in 1982. Play (Squeeze Album)
''Play'' is a 1991 album by the British new wave group Squeeze. It is the band's ninth album, and their only released by Reprise Records. It is the first LP in the Squeeze discography to feature only four official members instead of five (Steve Nieve took on many of the keyboard duties that would have gone to Jools Holland in the past). Tony Berg produced the album. In the liner notes to the 1996 Squeeze compilation '' Excess Moderation'', Glenn Tilbrook stated that he considers ''Play'' the beginning of Squeeze's "renaissance period." The album spent one week at number 41 in the UK Albums Chart in September 1991. The liner notes to the album are, appropriately, in the form of a play that incorporates the lyrics of the songs in a script that also references the plays ''Our Town'' by Thornton Wilder and '' Waiting for Godot'' by Samuel Beckett. Matt Irving (born Glasgow, Scotland; 16 March 1950 – 3 April 2015) was a Scottish musician ( keyboards, accordion, bass guitar, vocals). Irving was the bass guitar player for Manfred Mann's Earth Band between 1981 and 1986. He featured on the albums ''Somewhere in Afrika'' and '' Budapest Live''. Julian Miles Holland, (born 24 January 1958) is an English pianist, bandleader, singer, composer and television presenter. He was an original member of the band Squeeze and has worked with many artists including Jayne County, Sting, Eric Clapton, Mark Knopfler, George Harrison, David Gilmour, Magazine, The The, Ringo Starr and Bono. Chris Difford
Christopher Henry Difford (born 4 November 1954) is an English singer, musician, songwriter and record producer. He is a founding member and songwriter of the rock group Squeeze. Musical career Born in Greenwich, London, Difford has written lyrics for over 40 years, most notably in partnership with Glenn Tilbrook. The two were primary members in Squeeze and Difford & Tilbrook. According to Difford, he stole 50p from his mother's purse to put a card in a local sweetshop window advertising for a guitarist to join his band, although he did not have one at the time. Tilbrook was the only person who responded to the advert and they met for the first time shortly afterwards.
