Franco Udella
Franco Udella (born 25 February 1947 in Cagliari) is an Italian former world boxing champion. Amateur career Olympic games results 1968 (as a Light flyweight) *Lost to Alberto Morales (Mexico) 0-5 1972 (as a flyweight) *1st round bye *Defeated Felix Maina (Kenya) 5-0 *Lost to Boris Zoriktuyev (Soviet Union) 1-4 Pro career Udella turned pro in 1972 and won the newly created WBC light flyweight title in 1975 with a disqualification win over Valentin Martinez in the 12th round. Udella was then stripped of the title in August 1975, for failing to defend against Paraguayan Rafael Lovera, who had never fought a professional fight. The following year he challenged WBC light flyweight world champion Luis Estaba, but lost by KO in the 3rd round. He never challenged for a major title again. Flyweight is a weight class in combat sports. Boxing Flyweight is a class in boxing which includes fighters weighing above 49 kg (108 lb) and up to 51 kg (112 lb). Professional boxing The flyweight division was the last of boxing's eight traditional weight classes to be established. Before 1909, anyone below featherweight was considered a bantamweight, regardless of how small the boxer. In 1911, the organization that eventually became the British Boxing Board of Control held a match that crowned Sid Smith as the first flyweight champion of the world. Jimmy Wilde, who reigned from 1916 to 1923, was the first fighter recognized both in Britain and the United States as a flyweight champion. Professional boxing The weight limit at light flyweight in professional boxing is 108 pounds (49 kilograms). When New York legalized boxing in 1920, the law stipulated a "junior flyweight" class, with a weight limit of 99 pounds. This is a list of WBC world champions, showing every world champion certificated by the World Boxing Council (WBC). The WBC is one of the four major governing bodies in professional boxing, and certifies world champions in 18 different weight class (boxing), weight classes. In 1963, the year of its foundation, the WBC inaugurated titles in all divisions with the exception of light flyweight, super flyweight, super bantamweight, super middleweight, cruiserweight (boxing), cruiserweight and bridgerweight, which were inaugurated in the subsequent decades. The most recent title inaugurated by the WBC is in the bridgerweight division in 2021.
