Francis Thompson (film Director)
E. Francis Thompson (January 3, 1908 – December 26, 2003) was an influential American film director, producer, and writer. Thompson was born Ebenezer Francis Thompson on January 3, 1908, in Titusville, Pennsylvania, and commenced his career as a painter and art teacher before he directed his first film ''Evolution of a Skyscraper''. He is best known for the films, '' N.Y., N.Y.'' (1957), ''To Be Alive!'' (1964), and '' City Out of Wilderness'' (1974) and is credited with making the first IMAX film, '' To Fly'' (1976). Thompson's style can most accurately be described as ciné-poème. In many of his films, Thompson employs a variety of kaleidoscopic lenses, distorting devices, and secretive techniques, turning his work into more of an abstract art installation than feature film. Titusville, Pennsylvania
Titusville is a city in the far eastern corner of Crawford County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 5,601 at the 2010 census and an estimated 5,158 in 2019. Titusville is known as the birthplace of the American oil industry and for a number of years was the leading oil-producing region in the world. Titusville was notable for its lumber industry, including 17 sawmills, as well as its plastic and toolmaking industries. History The area was first settled in 1796 by Jonathan Titus. Alexandr Hackenschmied, born Alexander Siegfried George Hackenschmied, known later as Alexander Hammid (17 December 1907, Linz – 26 July 2004, New York City) was a Czech-American photographer, film director, cinematographer and film editor. He immigrated to the U.S. in 1938 and became involved in American avant-garde cinema. He is best known for three films: ''Crisis'' (1939), ''Meshes of the Afternoon'' (1943) and ''To Be Alive!'' (1964). He made ''Meshes of the Afternoon'' with Maya Deren, to whom he was married from 1942 to 1947.
