Francis Taylor, Baron Taylor of Hadfield (7 January 1905 – 15 February 1995) was an English businessman who founded Taylor Woodrow, a leading international contractor and developer. Career He was born in Hadfield, near Glossop in Derbyshire in 1905. By the age of 11, he was operating his father's fruit business. The family moved to Blackpool where at the age of 16, with help from his father and a bank, he spent £400 developing two houses which he sold at a substantial profit (£1000 each). This was the beginning of the business which Frank Taylor founded, to which his uncle Jack Woodrow also lent his name, now known as Taylor Woodrow. In 1974, he was given a knighthood. In 1979, he resigned as managing director and became life president. Francis Henry Taylor (14 June 1890 – 6 December 1963) was an English Cricketer who played for Derbyshire County Cricket Club between 1908 and 1911. Taylor was born at Wirksworth, Derbyshire the son of Walter Taylor of Fern House and his wife Alice. His father was a manufacturer of artificial fertilizer. Taylor made his debut for Derbyshire in the 1908 season, in a match against Lancashire, when batting in the middle order he made 10 in his first innings. He played again in 1908 and in one match in the 1909 season. He played four matches in the 1910 season, and completed his career with a single match in the 1911 season. Francis Taylor (martyr)
Francis Taylor (Irish: Proinnsias Táiliúr; Beannaithe, Swords, c. 1550 – Dublin, 29 January 1621) was a Mayor of Dublin, Ireland, who was incarcerated because of his Catholicism. He has been declared a martyr for his faith and beatified by the Catholic Church. Life Born in Swords, County Dublin, Taylor moved to the City of Dublin and married the daughter of a prominent family, being the granddaughter of a Mayor of Dublin. He himself was elected Dublin's mayor in 1595. Taylor was imprisoned for his Catholic faith in 1613, and died there on 29 January 1621, after seven years of refusing to accept his freedom by giving up his religion. Veneration Pope John Paul II beatified Taylor on 27 September 1992, as part of a group of 17 Irish Catholic Martyrs who were victims of religious persecution due to their Catholic faith during that era. Francis Taylor (1845 – 1 September 1915) was an English brewer and Liberal and Liberal Unionist politician. Francis Henry Taylor (1903–1957) was a distinguished American museum director and curator, who served as the director of the Metropolitan Museum of Art for fifteen years. He was born in Philadelphia, and started his career as a curator at the Philadelphia Museum of Art. In 1931 he became director of the Worcester Art Museum Massachusetts, before joining the Metropolitan Museum in New York City as its director in 1940. Taylor was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 1939 and the American Philosophical Society in 1946. Sometimes described as a showman, he developed a theory of the museum as an institution of active public service, not simply a repository of art. Francis Lenn Taylor (December 28, 1897 – November 20, 1968) was an American art dealer and the father of actress Elizabeth Taylor. Life and career He was born in Springfield, Illinois, the son of Elizabeth Mary (née Rosemond; 1869–1937) and Francis Marion Taylor (1860–1946). The family later moved to Arkansas City, Kansas. Francis began dealing in art in New York City for a wealthy uncle by marriage, Stephen Howard Young (22 May 1878 - 24 June 1972), later, a friend of Dwight Eisenhower after World War II. Taylor married stage actress Sara Sothern (whose real name was Sara Viola Warmbrodt and who was also from Arkansas City) in 1926 in New York. They were the parents of Howard Taylor (1929-2020) and of Elizabeth Taylor (1932-2011). Francis Pringle Taylor (1852 – 16 February 1913) was Naval officer, naval commandant of the Queensland colonial navy. Taylor was born in Edinburgh, the son of Rev. Robert Taylor, of Blairgowrie and Rattray, Blairgowrie, Scotland, and joined the navy as a cadet in 1866. After serving in several ships he was invalided and came to Australia in 1879, where from 1880 to 1884 he was lieutenant in command of the colonial corvette HMS Wolverine (1863), HMS ''Wolverine''. In 1884 he raised a volunteer naval artillery corps at Sydney. In 1885 he was promoted to commander of the Wolverine. From 1888 to 1892 Taylor served in the Queensland gunboat HMQS Gayundah as first lieutenant. In October 1888 the commander of the ''Gayundah'' Captain Henry Townley Wright, after a dispute with authorities, was ordered to turn the gunboat over to Taylor. William Francis Kyffin Taylor, 1st Baron Maenan (9 July 1854 – 22 September 1951), was a prominent English barrister and judge. He was a Railway and Canal Commissioner from 1930 to its abolition in 1949, and was its last member.
