Francis Stephen Award
The Francis Stephen Award (german: Franz Stephan Preis; french: Prix Franz Stephan) is an international scientific honor given to researchers in the humanities and social sciences. It is awarded every two or three years by the ''Österreichische Gesellschaft zur Erforschung des 18. Jahrhunderts'' (Austrian Society of 18th-Century Studies). History Created in 2000, the Francis Stephen Award, endowed with €1500, pays homage to Francis I, the husband of the Empress Maria-Theresa, and her interest in Austrian science, arts and culture. It honors works of excellence written in German, French or English about the 18th century or the Habsburg monarchy. The award ceremony takes place at the University of Vienna. Selection The board of directors of the society decide on the value of the submitted works in a multi-stage assessment process with the help of specialist consultants who have been designated thematically. Francis I, Holy Roman Emperor
Francis I (Francis Stephen; french: François Étienne; german: Franz Stefan; 8 December 1708 – 18 August 1765) was Holy Roman Emperor, Archduke of Austria, Duke of Lorraine and Bar, and Grand Duke of Tuscany. He became the ruler of the Holy Roman Empire, Austria, and Tuscany through his marriage to Maria Theresa, daughter of Emperor Charles VI. Francis was the last non-Habsburg monarch of both the Empire and Austria, which were effectively governed by Maria Theresa. The couple were the founders of the Habsburg-Lorraine dynasty, and their marriage produced sixteen children. Francis was the fourth (but oldest surviving) son of Leopold, Duke of Lorraine, and the French princess Élisabeth Charlotte d'Orléans. Duke Leopold died in 1729, and was succeeded by his son. In 1736, Francis married Maria Theresa. Johann Karl Wezel (October 31, 1747, in Sondershausen, Germany – January 28, 1819, in Sondershausen), also Johann Carl Wezel, was a German poet, novelist, and philosopher of the Enlightenment. Life Born the son of domestic servants, Wezel studied Theology, Law, Philosophy, and Philology at the University of Leipzig. Early philosophical influences include John Locke and Julien Offray de La Mettrie. After positions as a tutor at the courts of Bautzen and Berlin, Wezel lived as a freelance writer. A short stay in Vienna did not result in him getting employed by the local, national theater.
