Frank Smith (rugby Union)
Francis Bede Smith (28 February 1886 – 29 October 1954) was an Australian rugby union player who competed in the 1908 Summer Olympics. Smith, a centre, was born in Wellington, New South Wales and claimed a total of 4 international rugby caps for Australia. His debut game was against New Zealand, at Dunedin, on 2 September 1905. Francis Jagoe Smith
Francis Jagoe Smith CMG (9 September 1873 – 1 April 1969) was the Postmaster General of Ceylon and Director of Telegraphs, serving in the position from 1913 to 1923. Francis Jagoe Smith was born on the 9th of September 1873 in Barnet, Hertfordshire, the son of Henry Francis Smith. He was educated at Merchant Taylors' School and went on to study at Oxford University, where he obtained a Master of Arts. Smith traveled to Ceylon in 1896, to take up a position as a cadet in the Ceylon Civil Service. In 1905 he was appointed as the second assistant Colonial Secretary. In 1907 Smith, in conjunction with Hermann Albert Loos, compiled a publication containing all the enacted legislation applying to Ceylon, ''A Revised Edition of the Legislative Enactments of Ceylon''. In 1913 he was appointed as the Postmaster General of Ceylon and Director of Telegraphs, succeeding Arthur Sampson Pagden, CMG. Francis Smith (30 June 1847 – 25 November 1912) was a Sierra Leonean Puisne Judge in the Gold Coast. He was the second Sierra Leonean to qualify as a barrister after he passed the bar at Middle Temple on 26 January 1871. Early life and background Francis Smith was born in 1847 to William Smith Jr., registrar of the Mixed Commissary Court in Freetown, Sierra Leone, and his wife, Charlotte Smith (née Macaulay). William Smith was born in Cape Coast in the Gold Coast and was the son of a Fante princess and Judge William Smith Sr (1795–1875), who served as head of the Mixed Commissary Church in Freetown. Charlotte Macaulay was born to Mary Harding, a Jamaican Maroon mother, and Kenneth Macaulay, a distant relation of Lord Macaulay and second cousin to Zachary Macaulay. Francis Palmer Smith
Francis Palmer Smith (March 27, 1886, in Cincinnati, Ohio – March 5, 1971, in Atlanta, Georgia) was an architect active in Atlanta and elsewhere in the Southeastern United States. He was the director of the Georgia Tech College of Architecture from 1909–1922. After working in Cincinnati, Ohio and then Columbus, Georgia, Smith was hired as professor of Georgia Tech's new architecture school in 1908. He transferred the curriculum of the University of Pennsylvania which emphasized Beaux-Arts architecture. He met Robert Smith Pringle and formed a partnership with him in 1922, Pringle and Smith. Robert Smith Pringle (1883-1937) was born in Summerville, South Carolina, and was educated in Columbia, South Carolina. Francis William Smith was Dean of Kimberley, South Africa, and Rector of St Cyprian's Cathedral in Kimberley. Early life In World War I Smith served with distinction as a Second Lieutenant (later Captain) in the 1/8th (Leeds Rifles) Battalion West Yorkshire Regiment. He was awarded a Military Cross, the citation reading thus: "For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. With a few men he dispersed a fighting patrol of the enemy. Francis Wilford-Smith (12 March 1927 – 4 December 2009) was a British cartoonist, graphic artist, and producer and archivist of blues music. As a cartoonist, he used the pseudonym Smilby, a contraction of his surname with his wife's maiden name. Biography He was born Francis Wilford Smith (without hyphenation) in Rugby, Warwickshire, England, the second son of pharmacist Wilford Smith and Frances Hunt, who died shortly after his birth. He attended Warwick School, where he began drawing cartoons, but left at the age of 16 to train as a radio operator. He joined the Merchant Navy, serving during the Second World War on convoys to Africa and across the Atlantic. Northwest Passage Expedition Of 1746
In 1746 a group of United Kingdom investors, led by Arthur Dobbs, commissioned a private Northwest Passage expedition of 1746. Dobbs had played a key role convincing the Royal Navy and the Royal Society to send out an expedition in 1741. The selection of Christopher Middleton to command the expedition, and his cousin, William Moor, as second in command, was due to Dobbs' influence. Middleton reported that the large inlet he had been sent to explore, was not an outlet to the Pacific Ocean, and he named it Wager Bay. Several of Middleton's subordinates, including Moor, sided with Dobbs who accused Middleton of accepting bribes from his previous employer, the Hudson's Bay Company. Francis Smith of Warwick (1672–1738) was an English master-builder and architect, much involved in the construction of country houses in the Midland counties of England. Smith of Warwick may refer also to his brothers, or his son. Architectural work The county town of Warwick had been devastated by a fire in September 1694, and the projects involved in its rebuilding gave the Smith brothers their first prominence, which they retained for decades by a universal reputation for scrupulous honesty and competence. Howard Colvin, plotting their known commissions on a map, remarked that nearly all of them lay within a fifty-mile radius of their mason's yard, the "Marble House" in Warwick. The antiquary the Hon. He built the foundation for the Statue of Liberty, wrote many stories and received awards for his paintings. F. Hopkinson Smith was the great uncle of American architect, author and photographer G.
