Francis Pakenham (diplomat)
Sir Francis Pakenham (29 February 1832 – 26 January 1905) was a British diplomat who was envoy to Chile, Argentina and Sweden. Career The Honourable Francis John Pakenham was the seventh son of Thomas Pakenham, 2nd Earl of Longford. He was educated privately and at Christ Church, Oxford. He joined the Diplomatic Service in 1852 and served at Buenos Aires, Rio de Janeiro, Stockholm, Brussels, Washington, D.C. and Copenhagen before being appointed Minister Resident at Santiago, Chile, 1878–1885, Envoy Extraordinary and Minister Plenipotentiary to Argentina and non-resident minister to Paraguay 1885–1896, and Minister to Sweden and Norway 1896–1902. Thomas Pakenham, 2nd Earl Of Longford
Thomas Pakenham, 2nd Earl of Longford, (14 May 1774 – 28 May 1835), known as The Lord Longford between 1792 and 1794, was an Anglo-Irish peer. Background Pakenham was the eldest son of Edward Pakenham, 2nd Baron Longford, by Catherine Rowley, daughter of Hercules Rowley. His sister, the Honourable Catherine Pakenham, was the wife of the Duke of Wellington. Longford initially refused to allow them to marry, as the future Duke was then a penniless younger son with few prospects. One of his younger brothers was the Honourable Sir Edward Pakenham, a British Army officer who served under Wellington in the Peninsular War. A younger brother was Sir Hercules Robert Pakenham CB, KCB, a lieutenant-general of the British Army and was brevet colonel and aide-de-camp to the William IV of the United Kingdom. Sir Horace Rumbold, 8th Baronet
Sir Horace Rumbold, 8th Baronet, (2 July 1829 – 3 November 1913) was a British diplomat who was minister or ambassador to several countries. He succeeded his brother, Charles, as Baronet in 1877. Career He was educated privately in Paris and (no examinations being then required) was introduced into the diplomatic service by Lord Palmerston in 1849. He was posted in the same year as attaché to Turin (then the capital of the Kingdom of Sardinia-Piedmont) and subsequently served at Paris, Frankfurt, Stuttgart, Vienna and Ragusa. In December 1858 he was appointed secretary of the legation in China and went there in March 1859. The minister, Frederick Bruce, sent him back to England in January 1860 to report to the British government the active resistance which was offered to the progress of the British mission to the Chinese capital. William Barrington (diplomat)
Sir William Augustus Curzon Barrington (28 January 1842 – 23 February 1922) was a British diplomat. Background Born at Beckett Hall in Berkshire, he was the third son of William Barrington, 6th Viscount Barrington and his wife Jane Elizabeth, fourth daughter of Thomas Liddell, 1st Baron Ravensworth. His older brothers were George Barrington, 7th Viscount Barrington and Percy Barrington, 8th Viscount Barrington. Having been previously in private schools in Cheam and in Woolwich, Barrington received his further education in Germany, in schools at Mannheim and at Bonn. Diplomatic career Barrington joined the Diplomatic Service in 1860. After four years he was promoted to a 3rd secretary and in 1870 to a 2nd secretary. He was sent as secretary of legation to Buenos Aires in 1883 and was transferred to Budapest as consul-general two years later.
