Francis Coates Jones
Francis Coates Jones (1857–1932) was an American painter from a wealthy Baltimore family who studied in Europe under painters such as Bouguereau. He is known for his paintings of women at ease in richly decorated interiors or in flower-filled gardens. Early years Francis Coates Jones was born in 1857 in Baltimore, Maryland, into a wealthy family. He attended a Quaker school in Baltimore until he was fourteen. His elder brother was the landscape painter Hugh Bolton Jones (1848–1927). Europe In 1876 the Jones brothers visited Europe, where Francis became interested in becoming an artist. In London the two brothers stayed with Edwin Austin Abbey (1852–1911). Jones then spent nearly a year in Pont-Aven, Brittany, where there was a colony of American artists. He made friends there with Thomas Hovenden (1840–1895). In the fall of 1877 Jones moved to Paris. Francis Jones (historian)
Major Francis Jones CVO, TD, DL, FSA, MA, KStJ (5 July 1908 – 14 December 1993) was an author, archivist, historian and officer of arms. Early and private life Born in Trefin, Pembrokeshire, Francis Jones was educated at Fishguard County School (now Ysgol Bro Gwaun), and eventually became a schoolmaster. He began to work on the county records held at Haverfordwest in 1931 and he made a report to the county council in 1936. He then secured an appointment in the National Library of Wales, 1936–1939. Following war service and subsequent work on the official history of the Sicilian and Italian campaigns, he was appointed the first County Archivist of Carmarthenshire, serving from 1958 to 1973. He had married Ethel Charles in 1932: they had two sons and two daughters. Francis William Doyle Jones
Francis William Doyle Jones, sometimes Francis William Doyle-Jones, (11 November 1873–10 June 1938) was a British sculptor. Although principally a portrait sculptor, Jones is notable for the number of war memorials he created for British towns and cities following both the Boer War and World War I. Biography Jones was born, to Irish parents, in Hartlepool. He was the eldest son of a stonemason and monumental sculptor, Francis Jones (c. 1846–1918), from County Monaghan and for a time worked for his father before studying in Paris. Jones returned to England to study at the National Art Training School in London, where he was taught by Édouard Lantéri. After graduating, Jones established a studio at Chelsea in west London and had his first sculpture shown at the Royal Academy in 1903. Francis Jones was an American politician who represented Tennessee in the United States House of Representatives. Biography Jones was born in Tennessee and his birth date is unknown. Although he received a limited schooling; he studied law, and was admitted to bar. Career Jones began his practice in Winchester, Tennessee. David Crockett tells in his autobiography about the strong feelings that brought him to volunteer. According to Crockett's book, a young local lawyer named Francis Jones made a fiery speech, then volunteered and was elected captain, and later represented the district in Congress. Francis Jones (Canadian Politician)
Francis Jones (November 1, 1815 – August 2, 1887) was an Ontario civil engineer, provincial land surveyor and political figure. He represented Leeds North and Grenville North in the House of Commons of Canada as a Conservative member from 1867 to 1874. He was born in Ballykilleen, County Carlow, Ireland in 1815, the son of Edward Jones and Rowanna Sparling. He was an unsuccessful candidate for a seat in the Legislative Assembly of the Province of Canada in 1854 before being elected for North Leeds and Grenville in 1861 and 1863. He was elected again following Confederation and served until he was defeated in 1874. Jones ran unsuccessfully for reelection again in 1878. Sir Francis Jones (1559–1622) was an English merchant who was Lord Mayor of London in 1620. Career Jones was a city of London merchant and a member of the Worshipful Company of Haberdashers. On 18 July 1610, he was elected an alderman of the City of London for Aldgate ward. He was Sheriff of London for the period 1610 to 1611, and also Master of the Haberdashers Company from 1610 to 1611. He was Master of the Haberdashers again for 1613 to 1614 and for 1616 to 1617. He was knighted on 12 March 1617. In 1620 he was elected Lord Mayor of London and was Master of the Haberdashers Company again for 1620 to 1621. Francis Edgar Jones MBE FRS, (16 January 1914 – 10 April 1988) was a British physicist who co-developed the Oboe blind bombing system. Education Jones was born in Wolverhampton, the son of a teacher. In 1921 the family moved to Dagenham, Essex, where he attended the Royal Liberty School at Romford. He then attended King's College London. Research During World War II Jones worked in the Telecommunications Research Establishment (TRE) and collaborated with Alec Harley Reeves to develop the Oboe blind bombing system. After the war he directed investigations in the Basic Research Division of TRE on the detection and properties of infra-red and millimetre-wave radiation. He also made very accurate measurements of propagation velocity of electro-magnetic radiation at radio frequencies and studied applications of radar in meteorology. Francis Avery Jones
Sir Francis Avery Jones CBE FRCP MRCS (31 May 1910 – 30 April 1998) was a Welsh physician and gastroenterologist. He was born in Briton Ferry, Carmarthenshire, Wales but educated at the Sir John Leman High School, Beccles, Suffolk and at St Bartholomew's Hospital Medical School, where he qualified in medicine in 1934. As a house physician he became interested in gastroenterology and based his successful future clinical career on the treatment of stomach and bowel ulceration. In 1940, he was appointed as Physician to the staff of the Central Middlesex Hospital, where he joined a group of specialist gastroenterologists, remaining in the post until 1974. He also acted as consultant to St Mark's Hospital (1948–78) and the Royal Navy (1950–78). He was editor of the journal Gut from 1965 to 1970.
