Francis Isidore Power
Francis Isidore Power (1852–1912) was a solicitor and politician in Queensland, Australia. He was a Member of the Queensland Legislative Council. Early life Francis Isidore Power was born on 28 February 1852 at South Brisbane, the son of Michael Power and his wife Anna Maria (née Connolly). About 12 years old, he was sent to Ireland to attend the Clongowes Wood College in County Kildare and then Trinity College in Dublin. He worked in a firm of solicitors for 5 years before returning to Queensland in 1873. He established himself as a solicitor in Gympie. Politics Power was involved in local government, serving on the Glastonbury Divisional Board and the Widgee Divisional Board. He developed a flood prevention scheme for the Gympie goldfields, which led to his appointment as the first chairman of the Gympie Drainage Board. This is a list of members of the Queensland Legislative Council from 1 January 1910 to 31 December 1916. Appointments, made by the Governor of Queensland, were for life, although many members for one reason or another resigned. The Labor Party had a major win in the Legislative Assembly at the 1915 election, and proceeded with their stated goal of abolishing the Legislative Council by introducing legislation to that effect in 1916, which of course was defeated by the non-Labor majority Council. By the end of 1916, the membership had fallen from 44 to 37 members as the government had only appointed one new member in two years. Gympie Goldfields
During the Australian gold rushes, starting in 1851, significant numbers of workers moved from elsewhere in Australia and overseas to where gold had been discovered. Gold had been found several times before, but the colonial government of New South Wales (Victoria did not become a separate colony until 1 July 1851) had suppressed the news out of the fear that it would reduce the workforce and so destabilise the economy. The Shire of Widgee is a former local government area in the Wide Bay–Burnett area of Queensland, Australia. It was located in the rural areas around the town of Gympie but did not include the town itself, which was always in a separate local government area ( Gympie Division, Borough of Gympie, Town of Gympie and City of Gympie). The administrative offices of the Shire of Widgee were located in Gympie. History The Widgee Division was one of the original divisions incorporated on 11 November 1879 under the ''Divisional Boards Act 1879'' with a population of 1609. Kilkivan Division was created on 1 July 1886 from the western part of the Widgee Division and part of the Barambah Division under the ''Divisional Boards Act 1879''. Queensland Legislative Council
The Queensland Legislative Council was the upper house of the parliament in the Australian state of Queensland. It was a fully nominated body which first took office on 1 May 1860. It was abolished by the Constitution Amendment Act 1921, which took effect on 23 March 1922. Consequently, the Legislative Assembly of Queensland is the only unicameral state Parliament in Australia. Two territories, the Northern Territory and Australian Capital Territory, also maintain unicameral parliaments. Most of the early members of the Council came from wealthy families, were well educated and were born in England.
